RE: Oscar Robertson: Coaches today don't understand basketball
Considering what the Big O went through back in his high school and college days where he couldn't stay in the same hotels and had to get food from alleys behind restaurants and all the other tough challenges he had to face because of his color, I can understand some of the bitterness.

You really can't cross eras to compare players as competition had different rules and competition levels, etc. Still think from hearing those that saw him play that he would be one of the best players in today's day and age as well. I've only heard stories of just how unbelievable a player he was, plus he didn't have the benefit of the 3 point shot.

I will say Curry is amazing, but lets see him keep up this pace before considering him one of the best ever, though with his work ethic, I'd expect him to get there. But can he stay healthy, etc. Heck if he played back in the 80s when you could pretty much beat up guys and cutters, I don't think he would be big enough to take the pounding night in, night out. Shorter guards had to be very tough and able to take a pounding. Just another illustration as to the difficulty in comparing eras.

Former player doesn't think current players are as good... thinks things were harder in prior eras. Consider me shocked.

Oscar is great. He is wrong here, but he's not much different than many other past players in that regard.

Agree on Oscar.

Scored 25k points without a three point line. So yeah he can talk as much he likes.

RE: Oscar Robertson: Coaches today don't understand basketball
Oscar is flat out wrong.

Teams are doing everything imaginable to try to stop Curry.

What makes Curry special and yes he is the best shooter ever - no question about it. Is that while lots of guys can hit a shockingly high percentage on the catch and shoot or the one dribble stepping into their shot. Very few can come even close to the same percentages when they have to create their own shot.

Curry needs almost no separation and is nailing record numbers of long distance shots, off the dribble, off balance. moving in, falling away - it just doesn't matter.

Curry is hitting 45%+ on shots that to even the best shooters who have ever played the game previously were 20% "circus shots". The kind of thing you get taken out of the game for attempting too often. No one has ever been able to do that - and that is why he is rewriting ALL the long distance shooting records in the NBA.

My biggest issue with all of this talk is that the rules favor the shooter these days. No holding, grabbing and impeding movement has caused this offense efficiency. The guards have it easy compared to what Allen Iverson dealt with. The center position does not exist as a lane defender but more as a rim protector. That said he is the best of this new game.

Honestly, I can understand why Robertson sounds bitter at times. I can't imagine going through what he did day in and day out from childhood, college and through the NBA.

Ha! And this is also Curry's seventh year which means they are NOT counting the current year where he going to destroy a whole raft of NBA records.

Honestly, You look at games and minutes played (Isiaih rarely came out of the game and was the NBA league leader one of those years in minutes played) and shooting percentages and quickly realize that while Isiah was really impressive but he was a sub-average distance shooter (29% vs Curry at 46%) - the comparison is just not good.

Assists - forget it you got an assist for looking at another player in the 70s and 80's.

Isiah was a tremendous player but he was no Curry.

Good points, Zeke played 58 more games in the first six but the lack of defense / more offensively oriented game today probably makes it a wash. I'm a Pistons fan and Zeke would be second at PG to only Magic IMHO, but Curry is ridiculous …when he gets more rings that tone may change.

Thomas is a top 10-15 player ever in a much tougher era. Curry would've competed no matter the era…one of the quickest and purest releases ever. Not at Zekes level yet but wait until the final chapters are written then I may bump him up.

Nash is or will be in the basketball hall of fame, as will Curry. Curry has won an NBA Championship and the Warriors' record in '15-'16 (possibly the best in NBA history), demonstrates that he is not only a team player, but that his skills are impactful to the outcome of games at the highest level of competition. No one should denigrate Curry's talents, even the great Oscar Robertson, who, great as he was, won only one NBA championship and needed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to help him earn that one ring.
