Athletics budget... my how it has changed
So... anyone want to guess the amount Coach Bartow proposed for the UAB athletics budget for the 1978 budget year was?

I recall seeing something from the early 80's or at least before football where it was around $2 million.

Will be interesting to see what it actually was.

Also interesting to see if UAB matched UCLA's pay, etc.

Budgets at UAB were (and continue to be) a shell game. Much like every school in the US. Even the big power 5 schools pay for $8,000,000 media upgrades at their 100,000+ seat stadiums by designating it as a "classroom" for budget purposes :)

Would such a bookkeeping slight of hand enable a school's Athletic Department to shift the costs such a stadium upgrade to the school's academic budget rather than paying it out of their own Department money?

At both of Alabama's SEC schools, the Athletic Department reported spending about $200,000 annually per athlete - with the majority going to support football - while the academic side of the school struggles to spend $13,000 annually per regular student, even with annual tuition increases.

RE: Athletics budget... my how it has changed
Ok - so here it is!

The budget being used at the present time is for a total of $170,000. In discussions with Coach Bartow, he was indicated that the programs (especially those for women) are making good progress and will most likely rquire adjustments during the fiscal year. Also, the dues to the SunBelt Conference in the amount of $10,000 were not included in the original budget since we did not become affiliated with the conference until last month. My personal estimate of the probable expenditures for the fiscal year is that they will be around $200,000.

Other funding requirements for the program will be provided from the fund balance of Auxiliary Enterprises. With the amount collected from the Golden Hundred Account, the fund balance as of December 31, 1977 is approximately REDACTED. Advance ticket sales will begin soon. We plan to see payroll deductions for University personnel who wish to buy season tickets. And sales will be made to students at special prices on a first-come, first -served basis. We expect these sources to produce approximately $150,000. Ticket sales to the public will begin soon and are expected to generate at least $250,000 (I think this is a very conservative figure).

As the program continues to develop, both in Men's and Women's Division, we will continue to work with Coach Bartow. He is very cooperative and keeps us fully informed as Programs needs develop.

It may be very difficult for a young person to understand the effects inflation has had on the value of money since 1977. Prices have grown by very great amounts since then. I bought my house on 50th Street South in Crestwood in 1965 for $15,000. By 1980 its value was $70,000 and the last time it was on the market a couple of years ago, it was offered at $181,000. In the 1970s, the highest paid CEO in America (Grey of United Technologies) made as reported by TIME as $3.5 million.

Today over 3 million Americans make $1 million and up - sometimes hundreds of millions - annually. Today, America has more people making over $1 million annually than any other nation in the world. In Alabama, the top 1% averages an income of about $1.5 million annually.

It is true that we had double digit inflation in the late 70's. I understand that oh to well... but our budget is SIGNIFICANTLY more even taking into account the inflation rates :)

Adjusted for inflation the $200,000 budget of 1978 would be about $726,736.20 in 2016 dollars.
