RE: OT: Game of Thrones Discussion - Potential Spoilers Warning
Here's a question that's really been on my mind:

Is this Winterfell/Walkers battle going to be the ONLY battle vs. the Whitewalkers? Will there be a retreat halfway through only to have another showdown later in the season? I would like to think the super epic whitewalker battle would be something they save for the last/2nd to last episode...?

I think there's only one battle with whitewalkers remaining, then the battle for the Iron Throne the last three episodes.

Perhaps that's more with my heart than brain however.

Retreat from Winterfell isn't an option.

A theory circulates that the Night King (using his dragon) will surprise Kings Landing, turn the Living to the Dead, and outflank Winterfell.

I just can't wrap my head around the notion that the official whitewalker/mankind battle will start and end in one episode.

RE: OT: Game of Thrones Discussion - Potential Spoilers Warning
They're not going to play the Azor Ahai card this early, so the Final Battle of Winterfell is going to be a bitter loss. They'll fight hard, minor characters will drop and turn, they'll get a brief glimpse of hope and victory, and then it will get ripped away with vengeance. I expect Melisandre's return to be what buys time for a handful of the main characters and a few minor ones to escape on dragonback/horseback. She'll do some of that fire magic and burn through a good chunk of the production budget for the episode. Wouldn't be surprised if Varys doesn't survive the episode either.

There's definitely a swerve coming though.

Yeah, the wife doesn't think this is the big battle either. However, Bran said the Night King is coming for him.

The castle is attacked of course, and the night king was jnitially surprised that they had dragon glass weapons, changing his strategy in the battle. However, it's a heartbreaking episode, The unsullied commander, Sir Breann, and her wannabe lover wildling, Jamie Lannister, Sansa, Arya, The guy sam gives his sword to (forgive me with names) and pretty much the entire army is wiped out. The night kings Dragon is destroyed but so is another good dragon, leaving one alive, and the main group of whats left escape through a hidden tunnel in the crypt. The battle is the vast majority of the episode, its unreal. Maybe 30 minutes of non battle scenes. It ends with Cersei getting news of the battle that the norths army is crippled, and on the run, and she smiles.

Edit: it should.be added that overall the night king lost alot of troops. Added most of the dead from the norths army, but lost almost 3 times that in the attack. So the dead army is about half strength. Not looking good even still for the good guys

People who absolutely must live since there's 3 episodes left after the battle: Jaime (to kill Cersei and fulfill the valenquar prophecy), Hound (for Cleganebowl), Sam (story writer), Bran (there must always be a 3 eyed raven), some combination of AeJon/Dany/Sansa/Tyrion (actual plot). Oh, and Cersei. Doubt we see Bronn either.

The rest are wildcards

I'd add Greyworm to your list of those who will likely die. The whole convo he had w/ Missandei about riding off into the sunset on the beach...they couldn't have made it any more obvious Greyworm is gonna die.

And I'd add Tyrion to the list of those who must live. He actually got to sit down w/ Bran/3ER and have a long conversation. We don't know what they said...so they CAN'T just kill off Tyrion. Otherwise that scene would be all for naught.

Can't believe I forgot about Greyworm, he should be #1 on the list.

And you make a good point about Tyrion, I concur. We are too far along with too big of a budget to waste it on a scene between him and Bran if it doesn't go anywhere.

With the first pick in the Game of Thrones draft...

Goes without saying to avoid spoiling for anyone who hasn't watched the episode yet.

I won't put any spoilers on here for those that haven't seen tonight's episode, but that has to be the new record for the highest number of deaths in a TV show. If it's not, it has to be close to it.

I thought it was wonderful the show presented Arya badly frighten like the kid she is, was rescued by the Hound (who in turn was shaken out of his despair by Arya’s example), and then found the fortitude to use her training to slay the Night King and save her brother. Simply awesome.

Not as bloody for named heroes as I thought it would be. Classic GOT making us think a lot of them would die only to say "nope" to the God of Death again.

RIP Edd, sorry your one request of burning your body was not fulfilled.

RIP Ser Jorah, going out the way he'd want. Couldn't Dany just tell him she loves him as he's passing on?

RIP Theon, crazy character arc for sure, need to work on your 40 time though.

RIP Lady of Bear Island, at least she took down a massive kill with her

... that's it, right? If it didn't happen on screen, it didn't happen (right Ghost?)

MVP in a landslide. Though gotta give props to Dany for knocking Night King off his dragon, but then she blew it by landing her dragon for more than 10 seconds (seriously what is her awareness score)

And the Red Woman....although she wasn't killed by the dead.

Swing and a miss.

The entire fantasy element to the story was quickly and disdainfully dispatched by the show runners, who never wanted anything to do with it. It is now period piece fan fiction with no sense of urgency, and primary characters with no purpose left and no meaningful end of decades of previously painstakingly developed character arcs... Enjoy!

It was a really good episode overall. And they still have a purpose to win the throne. I e joyed it other than their cop out making the battle so dark and chaotic that you can't tell whats happening. They wrote out the entire horse element to purely save money.
