Hackers Are Holding a Hollywood Hospital Hostage for $3.6M Ransom
These hackers need to be caught somehow. Evidently the FBI can't stop this and companies many times pay the ransom. To do this to a hospital where it could cost lives is really bad...

just skimmed through the article....

bitcoins are the debil....they only exist in space but can buy thingys on the deep web....like really bad thingys...

more of this shite will follow....guarantee it....

hell, just wait until the quantum computer becomes reality.....or the 'thinking' robots....money won't worth the paper or have the jobs to earn the paper...

there are just some technologies that should be ill-FKN-legal in concept unless used for military purposes

future gens are so fk'd....

Yes, yes, and more yes. The deep web is a freaky place and bitcoins enable the nonsense.

I will admit I wish I had bought 27 bucks worth when they cost .01....(I actually gave it some thought back then....my whiff of all whiffs)

the concept never made sense to me until the news reports started leaking....buying drugs/hiring a hit man/illegal weapons/etc is tame in comparison to this....the coup de' gras this shite is....

RE: Hackers Are Holding a Hollywood Hospital Hostage for $3.6M Ransom
My home P.C. got ransom hijacked by opening up a very popular Torrent web page. Got a screen that said I have a ransom virus and to call an 800 number to free it. Luckly for Me I had recently backed up everything externally. I tried Ctrl-Alt-Del , that didn't work so I pushed in the off/ on button and shut it down. On restart it went into the log on turn itself off loop cycle. couldn't even use Safe Mode. I just reformatted everything and reloaded external data and added ad block plus, Peerblock, Spyware S&D as well as Webroot. Nasty stuff is out there You just don't know when, not if it will happen.

Well, the hospital paid the ransom, but it was far from $3.6M.....

Ugh. I hate reading threads discussing these things from normal people.

It must be what the guy who designs and builds a car engine feels like when a regular person gives him their theory as to what is causing some odd behavior with the engine. "It's idling rough that's the CV joint right??"

Pretty sure that $17K paid is a lot less than potential lawsuits that were sure to come if that data was released and something happened. CEO made a business decision.

then why do it?

better yet, why create a site that corrals such?

seems pretty silly coming from a demigod...

I find it quite interesting that the hospital hasn't invested in its internal network to protect against this type of thing. And more than that, they seem to lack any redundancy in their setup.

I thought hospitals had redundant or back up systems, etc.

I've found in my career I have taken the opposite track. Used to be kind of a jerky no it all who resented dumb decision by PHB's.

Now I accept that they might know something about the business I do not and they might understand what I am saying but cant tell me why. Managing a team kind of opened my eyes.

RE: Hackers Are Holding a Hollywood Hospital Hostage for $3.6M Ransom
Ransomware is little more than a nuisance unless you have no backup strategy. All this tells me is that the hospital is paying for the cheapest IT staff they can get their hands on.

The fact that this attack shut down their network says that the ransomware virus didnt just get into a certain drive, their entire network was wide open.

And if they dont change their operations immediately, then this information is going to get hacked the moment they decrypt their data. Because hackers know that this hospital's system is wide open.

Happened to my employer at the time last summer. They paid, but I was never able to find out how much. They're currently circling the drain now, and the same management in charge then is still there now.

must be the variant that crawls network shares. pretty horrifying. there should be an unemployed IT director in LA right now. no backup? no excuse.
