UAB's new club Ice Hockey team will take on Mississippi State in their inaugural game at 7pm on Saturday April 2nd at the Pelham Ice Complex. Admission is free.

This is great news. Maybe one day my dream of Dragon Ice will come true. Add gymnastics and women's lacrosse to offset. I'm game !

Now the entire UA family has a Hockey club at least. I hope that this is a success and we one day get UAB vs UA in hockey. Especially because UA Hockey sent out a lot of love to the #FreeUAB movement

Doesn't the UA hockey club play at Pelham as well? I think I've seen where UA/AU play the hockey version of the Iron Bowl there or at least did.

Could this be the start of college hockey conference in the south? I know just about all if not all SEC schools have a club hockey team & have for some time & some of the reasoning behind killing UAH hockey a few yrs ago was few & far between hockey teams down south for scheduling.

Well, at least the students and fans did.

How many scholarships does an ice hockey team require? Do they usually get full rides like FB and BB, or are they like baseball and give out mainly partials? This could affect the number of women's scholarships needed under Title 9.

The modern female athletes may demand a women's ice hockey team, but many schools get by with a field hockey team.

Club sports don't have scholarships. I don't believe they're even tied to the athletic department.

I was asking in response to the possibility of the sport becoming a regular Athletic Department sport. Remember that UAB football started as a club team.

In answer to your question, yes if it ever became a official scholarship sport at UAB, they would have to add womens scholarships in some sports as well, I'd assume something along the lines of what Attalla said as those women sports have local support & athletes to choose from w/ little start up/maint costs other than the athletes/coaches themselves. I would assume somewhere between 10-20 scholarships on a team would be std but not fully sure. I'd check UAH since it's already Div1 hockey to see what they carry.
