Men's Basketball Weekly Honors - Feb. 8

Rob Washburn

PLAYER OF THE WEEK:

Ron Curry • James Madison
Sr., G, 6-3, 200 - Pennsauken, N.J./Paul VI

Curry averaged 23.5 points to lead James Madison to a pair of CAA victories last week. The senior guard scored a team-high 16 points in a 78-56 win at Drexel last Thursday and followed with a career-high 31 points as the Dukes rallied past Hofstra, 98-95, in overtime on Sunday. Curry shot 48.3% from the floor and was 9-of-19 from 3-point range, including a game-tying trey with 12.6 seconds left in regulation against the Pride. He has scored double figures in a league-best 17 straight games.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK:

Omar Prewitt • William & Mary
Jr., G/F, 6-7, 195 - Mount Sterling, Ky./Montgomery County

Prewitt averaged 24.5 points as William & Mary extended its winning streak to four with a 2-0 week. The junior wing scored 17 of his season-high 28 points in the second as the Tribe rallied for an 86-77 victory at Northeastern last Thursday and then poured in a team-best 21 points as W&M rolled past Delaware, 90-64, on Saturday. Prewitt shot 69.2% (18-26) from the floor over the two games and also grabbed six rebounds. He's topped the 20-point mark nine times this season.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK:

C.J. Bryce • UNCW
Fr., G, 6-5, 180 - Charlotte, N.C./North Mecklenburg

Bryce averaged 19.5 points and 3.5 rebounds to help UNCW pick up two road wins last week. The freshman guard tied his career-high with 24 points, including 18 in the second half, as the Seahawks came from behind to beat Hofstra, 70-67, last Thursday. He also contributed 15 points in UNCW's 90-73 triumph at Northeastern. For the week, Bryce shot 65.4% (17-26) from the floor and also made four steals. He leads all CAA freshmen in scoring with 11.7 ppg.

More CAA men's basketball news and notes to follow later this afternoon.

Seems like Bryce and Ingram being the stars of the Hofstra game hurt Flemmings' chances this week. Curry carrying JMU on his back against Hofstra definitely earned him honors, and its hard to argue against Prewitt as well.

Nice to see Bryce take another ROW award (his 4th). He remains the front-runner for Rookie of the Year.

No argument at all on those awards. As great of a season as Flemmings is having, I like our team game going forward. Yes, he's racking up awards when he should, but we also are seeing the fruits of a system with an identity once again at UNCW.

Keep winning!!!

Seems like '03 could have been a possibility at UNCW with Blizzard and Goldsberry. I'll do a CAA record search real fast and see what pops up.

The records are on page 33 and 34 of this PDF. Skimming it quickly, it doesn't look like it's ever happened, but I may have missed something.

Just checked. Since the league began in 1983 (according to known records on the CAA site) no team has ever claimed the POY and ROY in the same year.

I think we'll end up with Coach of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and at least one CAA First Teamer in Flemmings. That wouldn't be a bad haul at all. :)

Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if Shaver gets COY with the Louisville fallout relating to Coach Keatts. They may seek to avoid having to answer questions later at the league office.

On the other hand though, it has nothing to do with his massive success at UNCW.

I hate mentioning it, but it's hard not to at this point.

I don't see how that could happen. UNCW was picked 6th, and may well win the conference outright, having lost 3 starting Seniors, and now starting a walk on transfer, a freshman and another walk on. I don't think they can allow the fear of something that hasn't happened to influence their votes, unless they have solid proof he was involved.

RE: CJ Bryce takes Rookie of the Week, Flemmings shut out of POW honors
No one has ever been recognized as a CAA Rookie of the Week four times in the season, until CJ Bryce came along. Not Blizzard, Goldsberry, or anyone else: http://uncwsports.com/news/2016/2/8/MBB_0208161700.aspx

Bryce Sets UNCW Record For Rookie Honors

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW freshman guard C.J. Bryce has been recognized as the Colonial Athletic Association's Rookie-of-the-Week in men's basketball for the fourth time this season, setting a school record for the number of times a newcomer has achieved the honor.

Bryce was singled out after sparking the Seahawks to a pair of conference road victories over Hofstra and Northeastern last week. He was previously showcased for his play on Nov. 30, 2015, Dec. 28, 2015, and Jan. 25, 2016.

It marks the sixth time a UNCW player has been honored by the conference office this season. UNCW holds down first place in the loop with an 18-5 overall record and 10-2 league ledger.

A 6-5, 180-pound guard from Charlotte, Bryce breaks the record of three weekly rookie honors he shared with former Seahawk point guard Chad Tomko, who also hailed from the Queen City.

Bryce averaged a team-best 19.5 points and 3.5 rebounds as the Seahawks took over first place in the CAA standings. He converted 65.4 percent of his field goals on 17-of-26 from the floor and added 4-of-6 at the charity stripe.

The smooth shooting Bryce opened the week by making 11-of-17 field goals and scoring 24 points, including 18 in the second half, in UNCW's 70-67 victory in a matchup of two first place teams at Hofstra. He capped the outstanding week with 15 points on 6-of-9 from the floor to help the Seahawks go 2-0 on the road trip in a 90-73 rout of Northeastern in Boston.

Bryce ranks third on the team in scoring at 11.7 points per game and is tied for third in rebounding at 4.2 rebounds per game. He leads all CAA freshmen in scoring and has reached double figures in six of the last seven contests.

"C.J. has impressed us with his hard work and dedication," said Kevin Keatts, UNCW's second-year coach. "As a basketball staff and team, we're very excited about this honor for him."

The former North Mecklenburg High School standout is UNCW's 19th CAA Rookie-of-the-Week selection

What about rookies from other schools? What is the all-time CAA record for ROW awards in a season?

Not sure what the record is, but Omar Prewitt won it 7 times his freshman year.
As far as COY goes, there are a lot of deserving coaches this season. Personally, CofC's Earl Grant would have my vote at this point. He's done a great job this season, especially considering all of the players they have lost to injury, and they're still competitive without leading scorer Canyon Barry.

True. Plus Charleston was picked to finish 9th, which I didn't realize until now. I would be very much OK with a member of the Brad Brownell coaching tree winning Coach of the Year if it is not Coach Keatts. Grant has done a fantastic job.

What are the qualifications for Rookie of the Week? Can only a freshman qualify? Chris Flemmings is a rookie to the CAA; is he not qualified because he transferred? He is certainly one of the best newcomers to the league.

Umm. We lost our top transfer before the season even started(or so we thought...Flemmings turned out pretty good. But, imagine if he HAD played...?). You gotta' play with what you have. He used a scholarship, and sat for a whole year and never played. Shouldn't factor in at all.

Hey 82hawk. Are you feeling a little better about your preseason production? You really should be. Your prediction doesn't have to be perfect to be good.

Funny you ask. I was thinking about that the other day as we sit here with two losses. I thought Keatts went off track to start CAA play, and looking back, we may have beaten NU, and may have had a chance with Towson if we were running the lineup like we are now. Possibly could be on top with only 1 loss and maybe undefeated. I'll be interested in seeing how we play Towson in round two.

W&M and Towson look like the toughest remaining matchups we have. I don't think Elon or CoC can take us, and we seem to have the # of JMU and Hofstra.

Still feels like we could end up with 4 losses. The main difference I see now, is that Bryce is our zone penetration killer. He manages to get in the paint on a zone, and makes what look like easy layups. That collapses the zone, and Ingram and Flemmings(Ponder now too), can light it up outside.

I wouldn't be surprised if we won out, but also wouldn't be surprised if we went 4-2. A win at W&M would make me think we win out.
