MD, that anti-Northern Star line is now drivel. In the last few years NS has been running football, basketball stories on the front page in recognition that it was the most noteworthy thing on campus, the paper played up and advocated for bus trips to MAC Championships and bowl games, celebrated NIU bowl successes, etc. There was a time when a crusty advisor and staff were that way, but even they occasionally had reasons to do so, see the ineptness of President Clyde Wingfield, Gerald O'Dell, Charlie Sadler, and Eddie Williams. Sorry, but these were letters to the editor and an editorial that raised legitimate questions and concerns. This wasn't an attempt to "bring down NIU athletics," it was saying a particular marketing effort failed in many ways and while seemingly not a big deal, more is / should be expected from this current athletic administration.

This just further enforces the everyone gets a participation trophy theory.

You guys tried hard so we'll still give it to you.

6,000/19000+ = ~30% of the student body

People need to realize that some things need to be earned.

They might have known that, but I do believe the true hope was that this contest would help drive the goal to get more butts in seats. The intent was good I believe, the contest rules missed the boat. Having a winner that they could market would have meant more butts in seats for future games. Now, they have nothing to show for the contest other than perceived negativity that nobody won because of the crap rules. Hope I am wrong.

Unfortunately, I think you're right.

Yep. BACKFIRED

It's not about a participation trophy.....athletics could have and should have done a better job of spelling out the rules. At the very least, don't be disingenuous about it after the fact and put it in terms that the students failed. It was not necessary to wait until after the season was over to announce the terms weren't met, they could have been smart enough to have something, anything in the way of a reward for the top individual or top three, to perhaps encourage students to take part in future promotions.
Since you've apparently not kept up with the latest, NIU's enrollment is at a 34-year low of 18,519, but yes 6,000/18,519 is slightly less than 30% of the student body; so what? If anything that make Morris White and Huskie marketing look bad for conducting an unrealistic promotion. Find me any P5 or GO5 program where they expect 30% of their student body to show up for every home game. We all want NIU athletics to succeed, but that doesn't mean blindly defending everything that happens. It's like football, either execute better or try something different. Next time, instead of losing a yard, gain seven; instead of hanging on for a win, blow the opponent out.
People need to realize promotions should be about gaining, increasing support, not something that looks like a sleight of hand trick.

RE: "No Free Tuition After NIU Football Attendance Contest"
Saving some face. No matter what at this point, it was a mistake and poorly planned. I do appreciate the effort and the new ideas, but that attendance mark was NEVER going to be met. Is there any school that was going to have 30% of their student population at an athletics event?

Now, if the prize was REALLY huge, maybe all 4 years paid for? Then I can see making it very difficult and probably not possible, but it's not like this was some ridiculous prize, it was a couple thousand dollars and because of that, they made themselves look dumb.

RE: "No Free Tuition After NIU Football Attendance Contest"
As a current student the biggest problem I had with the contest was having to use the app. I always checked in, but I know that a lot of people didn't even realize that you had to use the app at the beginning of the year. The majority of students come stumbling in at kickoff from tailgating and using the app never crosses their minds. Yes, this is at least partially the students fault, but why couldn't they just count us when we swipe our One Card's? There was never a chance for 6,000 students at the last few games anyways but using the app was never going to succeed. My girlfriend should be one of the 86 so I'm interested to see what they come up with.

Exactly! I'm not a student anymore so I'm not eligible, but if I was I would have been out the first game cause I forgot to check in even though I went to all 6.

Exactly.

Also, article states high game was 1st game, 3k. Is that registered or total? There had to be more than 3k game 1, unless a lot of non-students were standing in the student section. Guessing 3k is less than 50% of capacity. Had to be more than that.

OK numberscanbetwisted.
Regardless of what you think, the athletic department has decided they needed to do things a little better, so the 86 will be rewarded in some way. Unlike you, they chose to take a higher road.
