RE: NFL realignment
If the Rams ever get a roommate, could the Jags move to the abandoned city?

The Jags will move eventually, it's just a matter of when and where. Most say London but moving to San Diego or Oakland would be a bad idea. Those places are already spoken for in general. San Diego is not LA but it'll be tough competing with the Chargers if they're just up the freeway. Some may but most aren't gonna give up their fandom.

Over Jerry jones dead body. Literally. And probably the redskins, Giants, and Eagles, whose gates are much bigger when they play Dallas.

1) Not that many Charger fans will stick with them if they move to LA. Certainly not enough to close out the possibility of a new team moving in, but...

2) Nothing changes in San Diego for a new team. They either move into old Qualcomm or have to put up a bunch more of their own money to build a new stadium. SD isn't refusing to pony up more cash because they don't like Spanos - they're refusing because it's a bad deal. Same goes for Oakland.

If the Chargers mess around and do something like make the Super Bowl, there'll be so many San Diegans on the bandwagon you'd think they still played there. When the Titans made their run to the Super Bowl, I was still a big fan even though they had left a few years prior.

You don't give up your fan affiliation so quickly, especially if the team is still right down the road.

I think you misunderstand the relative priority of football in Southern California culture. It's nothing like Texas. As long as Spanos owns the team, only a small number of die hards will hang on, and as the players they know go away (traded/retired/released), lots of even those die hards will lose touch. And let's face it, the Chargers will be lucky to sniff the playoffs the next couple of years, let alone the Super Bowl - there's not going to be much to root for.

That raises another issue, I think: How long can two crappy teams occupy the same stadium while still attracting decent crowds?

RE: NFL realignment
The NFL is the easiest sport to catch lightening in a bottle in and shoot to the top, so the Chargers could be in the Super Bowl next year (which would make you think the city would do all it could to save the team).

I never said they wouldn't lose fans if they moved up the coast but that most would disappear overnight? Not at all.

You don't think they have already?

RE: NFL realignment
Nothing to spark up a little civic pride and feverish pitch for funding for a new stadium like competing for a title.
