Like the fact that somebody seems to be hitting Ohio hard. Hopefully the new DC or Bullough has been assigned to that area.

RE: 2017 Football Recruiting
I have a feeling that this is going to be the highest rated Recruiting class in EMU history.

Why you ask?

This is where the pieces start coming together for Creighton and Company to produce 5 wins this season. The 5 wins and being competitive in virtually every game start building optimism for the MAC title run in 2017.
The 5 wins will demonstrate to future recruits that Creighton is the guy to trust and place their football future by pledging to him and EMU.
Watch, it is going to happen........

They have dominated MAC recruiting for 3 years in a row, and unfortunately, as long as Fleck is there, will continue to do so. That recruiting will probably also start to really show as they compete for MAC championships every year here on out.

You recruit, you win, unless you're just a terrible coach. Somebody please poach Fleck ASAP!!!!

Would be surprised if he's still there, if they win the MAC this year. Some P5 school will make a big $ offer too big to turn down.

Dear EagleTough,
Coach Fleck will be entering into his fourth season, with all of these supposed great recruiting classes, this should be Western's year to win the MAC Championship.
However, I'm not convinced that he is a very good coach. As far as I'm concerned if Western does not win the championship this year with all the supposed talent they have piled up....then something is not right, and to me it is coaching.

Stars on a recruits name does not tell the whole story especially in football. Look at Rich Rods classes that were always highly rated. EMU will be much improved. this year. I agree that coaching is huge in implementing the correct strategy.

Agree 100%. With a redshirt Senior QB returning, and many of his recruits now in their 3rd and 4th years, I would expect them to win the MAC this year. If not, I would agree, maybe his primary talent lies in his personality, motivational techniques, and recruiting ability, and not so much in the X's & O's. Regardless, they are going to be tough as long as he is there.

Sure there are always outliers, late bloomers, and just under recruited kids.......but recruiting rankings are a very good overall predictor of future football success. Doesn't take a major study to see that the top MAC teams are usually the top MAC recruiters. While most here seem to think the current recruiting is better than past recruiting, unless we take another big step forward, our ceiling right now is about that 6 win middle of the pack.

I'm not being negative whatsoever, it is what it is. To compete for MAC championships we need to recruit better and better players. 6 wins and a bowl game would be fantastic, based on the history of this program. But before I'm done wasting countless hours 03-shhhh ..........and bending ears on this board, I want to see Creighton and this group of kids become legitimate MAC contenders.

Tall order for sure, but I believe in the staff, especially with the additions of Neathery & Bullough. Just need to really, really focus on the recruiting piece.

(No explanation for Rich Rod at MI, that was just a weird bad fit.)

Agree 100%. Recruiting has to improve substantially.

I too believe the ceiling is now 6 wins.

The Rich Rod deal had "bad fit" written on it from day one.

There are lessons to be learned trying to be what one is not. UofM should try to.be UofM. Why not?

Relax Sally, Ken made a reasonable point. Fleck is a master recruiter for sure. If he doesn't win the MAC this year, you can be sure 'the Zoo' will start fretting Flecks ability to coach.

What's the max WMU can afford to keep him? If he wins the MAC this year you can be sure the big boys will come calling. Much like they did at Toledo at Bowling Green the last 2 years. The MAC is a great coaching springboard to the next level, always has been.

Enjoy it while it lasts, without being a **ck. See you this year in 'the Zoo'.

RE: 2017 Football Recruiting
Dear broncojohnny.
EagleTough pretty much made the point that I was trying to make. Giving me football scores does not prove anything about coaching. If they are lopsided scores, that generally means one team had more talent then the other.
I've also been to the Stampede to see what Broncos have to say about their team and their coach, and not everyone is on board over there with Coach Fleck's ability as a coach.

The WMU board seems populated with this types with their purported athletic superiority complex which outside of football lacks any type of support.

Fleck is making around $850,000 a year...Dollars coming from several very wealthy former Bronco players.....One is prepared to match any offer that may come to Fleck down the road.....
Before you guys spend any more time analyzing our coaches ability, ya might try getting a grip on your current head coach's ability.
See you at Waldo this fall....Any bettors willing to make a small wager ???????
Boys, have a nice day...

No one has ever questioned Creighton's ability to coach (except you). EMU is the toughest FBS coaching job in America for a wide variety of reasons ( U of M shadow, commuter school, lack of tradition) that are unique to EMU. I'd take Chris Creighton as a pure X and Os guy and on character any day. What you see is what you get with CC. Straight no chaser. Fleck may be a better sales person and may have an easier sale than CC. I asked him once about Fleck using the term used car salesman. CC the class act he is refused to comment and let the comment pass and we moved on conversation wise. I'm not concerned about CC.

Enjoy your nap and your milk and cookies little Johnny.

The situation, as I see it, is a big more complicated.

English left a program which had talent but was mired in losing. I think it is safe to say that the players 'underachieved.' There were years of losing and then the death of a player under unfortunate, shocking circumstances.

CC has not performed any 'miracles' with the talent he inherited or recruited.

As suggested (if I may) by EagleTough, the coaching on the defensive side of the ball was not as good as it could have been.

So what do we have in Year Three of CC: Improved coached (and a much, much more favorable schedule) but less talent????

In human sciences there was the great 'nature/nurture' debate (hint: it is both). In sports it is both (nature, i.e., God-given talent and nurture, i.e., coaching and development).

I'd suggest that Year Three is critical for CC's recruiting. Eventually one has to out recruit your peers (e.g., WMU, TOL, CMU, NIU, BSU, etc.) at least some times. Being consistently out recruited is a recipe for failure.

God knows we need success. It has been 20 years since we had a men's basketball coach recruited away for a better job (that would be both Waters and Braun) and 22 years in football (Cooper was recruited away from us by Louisville).

Men's basketball and football have been total revolving doors for the past 20 years.
