Commercial Appeal has lost over half their circulation over the last 15 years...from a high of 244,000 in circulation to hovering around 115,000 last year and dropping closer and closer to the 100,000 as predicted this year.
That was the main reason why the long-time owners of the paper sold to Gannett as they had to pull the rip cord before it got too late.
NOTE: Appeal promotes their e-circulation rates in their daily numbers now, most over inflated because they give them out for free/reduced rate to schools.

RE: Fire Calkins, Keep Pastner
Gary Parrish and Easterwood nailed it yesterday on what most negatively affects a recruit's decision. They reeled off names of former Tigers who came out of high school as potential NBA stars but never developed under Pastner. Adonis, JJ, Tarik and others. Also the number of guys who transferred out. Nick, Austin, Iverson et al. Like it or not, they sign with coaches they think can get them to the League.
This is what recruits pay attention to, not messageboards.

But Pastner (sometimes it takes hiring one's Dad) has still be able to do that for the most part...some top recruits keep signing with him.
As I've stated years ago...Pastner should have laid off the need for troubled/transfers (with just 1 or 2 years eligibility) and focused solely on HS players so he could build a culture and have players grow up in his system...especially some "team" ballers from outside of Memphis (not every recruit has to be a 4-5 star player...as you still need good facilitators on both ends of the court to win games).
Memphis had a top 10-20 type program when he arrived...and that cart blanche could have helped him land HS recruits from across the country...but the continued focus almost too much on Memphis area HS players and troubled JUCO's...he has missed out a ton of national players who probably would have love to gone to play for Memphis in the past.

Yes there is.....
The internet, cable, cost, it's impractical, aging readership, and other factors.
It has little to do with Calkins or any other columnist or reporter there. Almost every newspaper in the country is dying.

RE: Fire Calkins, Keep Pastner
Hey Batman, I do not plan on leaving, even if Paster leaves. You see, I have been a season ticket holder for 45 years. Based on your past posts, I'm not sure you can count that high. I attend the games not matter what is going on with the coach. I support the university and the players period. The coaching changes will take care of themselves. We pay people like Bowen to be in charge and make the decisions when necessary.
What bothers me is that we used to be a great basketball school. There is no way to compare us with Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, etc, because they have great fans. We used to have those kinds of fans who packed the building no matter who we were playing or what our record was. Calipari spoiled us into thinking we were an elite program.

Pretty sick back and forth on all counts in this thread. Like kids at the dinner table fighting over who's manners are worse.
If you're not supporting the Tigers.... YOU have the problem, not the Tigers.
Even the GB Packers fans support their team. If it were not for the Pac 10 players (Clay Mathews and Aron Rogers), GB would be worse off. GB has stunk up the house in the not too distant past.

Another post blaming the fans, lol.
For the first 5 years of the Pastner regime the reported attendance was 16K+ per home game.
So, the building was packed at the end of the Finch tenure? The building was packed for Johnny Jones and Tic Price? It didn't look packed to me......
45 years season ticket holder? Just because you bought a ticket 45 years ago and have held onto it doesn't mean what you think it means......

Nah, they will dump Josh as soon as his desk is cleaned out. They will have a new coach to worship by then.

So Calkins is the reason we went a couple of years without a point guard? All this time I've been blaming...umm...someone else.
We had a point guard in last year's group of freshmen. Didn't stay but we did have a point guard.
