So the real discussion should be " Auburn or Memphis basketball, Pearl gets to pick "

More like: "SEC vs AAC, who does that?"

If you are after the paycheck, the Auburn is the answer. If you want a chance to win a title and feed your coaching ego, then id have to go with Memphis.

It's not that Memphis anymore. And not because of Pastner.

I agree...why would BP leave the SEC for the AAC?...they got exactly 2 bids to the NCAA Tourney last year...not to mention Cincy and Uconn can't wait to get into another conference.

Imho, Pastner is a lame duck. The search should begin in March and will be a real funfest.

But there is hardly universal love for Pearl to Memphis among Memphis fans. Many boosters imho would rebel at the hire. , I doubt if Pearl wants to take over rebuilding another team again since he's already started that with Auburn. He would have taken the Memphis job in a heartbeat 2 yrs. ago if he'd been offered. But he wasn't and has found his home imho. Since Calipari came from Memphis/Cusa 2.0, not sure that Pearl from Auburn/SEC has any inside track at the KY job.

But he's a weasel, so who knows.

Except for maybe Tulsa and Temple, every AAC team "can't wait to get into another conference". Even Tulane has dreams of the ACC.

Even if Memphis isn't the basketball program of old, Auburn never has been a great program with any staying power. Auburn has had a great season or three. But Zero final fours in 8 appearances.

Memphis has done more in the NCAA tournament since 2000, than Auburn has done in 100 years.

Not sure that the SEC which ranked 6th last year in rpi compared to the AAC ranking 8th is a deciding factor, but I doubt if Pearl wants to take over rebuilding another team again since he's already started that with Auburn. SEC vs AAC has nothing to do with one being 6th and one being 8th. It has more to do with each SEC school getting 30 million dollars from playoff and TV money.

The Miami Hurricanes almost shut down their football program in the 1970's then Howard Schnellenberger came along and made a DOG of a program an elite program...if the RIGHT coach takes over a program things can change in a hurry.

Mike Anderson and Jerod Haase were the right coaches at the right time (unfortunately Murray Bartow and Mike Davis were not)

RE: NBR - Memphis coach fired
I'm not trying to **** on Memphis, but I can't even begin to see how or why it'd be considered. The only area Memphis has Auburn beat is in basketball pedigree and that doesn't have any real bearing on the present. Pearl is making good money in a conference that has a higher profile with a team that is steadily getting better under his watch. Plus the standards at Auburn are pretty low compared to Memphis. Basketball is an afterthought. Just making it to the tournament would be something to be celebrated. At Memphis, you better make it in and win or else. Not only that, but I think the SEC is the easiest conference to get an at large bid in.

What would going to Memphis do for him that can't be done at Auburn?

#1. Pay him equal to the football coach.

#2. When Memphis is rocking, you get 18800 in the stands. Auburn gets you 8000 if it is a weekend and a big name opponent.

#3. It is easier to recruit city kids to Memphis than it is to recruit them to Auburn.

#4. You sell 5 star talent on the near future. Auburn has Sir Charles & Chuck Person. Guys that played over 15 years ago. Memphis has 6 guys in the league right now.

Pearl will be able to skirt the rules to the limit - at AU they will not risk an investigation in BBal might get football in trouble had to fire his bagman and has
Publically complained about compliance twice

At Memphis Pearl would have total control like Saban does

Nine players have transferred from his program in the past few years, most of them highly recruited players. Nice and genuine doesn't cut it in Memphis.

Which is why I can understand why they want him gone.

Pastner had a couple of really good recruiting classes, and then the quality tailed off with players not coming or leaving once there. What reasons are being given around the program for this decline? The HC in all sports gets the blame for such declines, but is that the whole story?.

Pastner always has good recruiting classes. Every year is the year for him, and every year something comes up. I'm actually surprised he has lasted as long as he has there. Everything has to fall on Pastner here. He can't keep guys, can't get them there, can't win games, etc. it's still a good place to coach in my opinion, because you can recruit. It's about finding the right guys in the future.
