I'm not as sold as most that 2016 is Southern Miss' year. We'll be good, but I think if Monken stays the 2017 year will be special, even losing Mullens, due to the recruiting talent Monken is bringing in developing. 2018 and beyond could even build on that, if we keep Monken or hire in such a way as to continue the success.

That said . . . yes, if Southern Miss has a breakout year having Bower in the room, excited about what "his team" is doing could lead to others in the room, excited for him, starting to pull for Southern Miss too and get us better return in the poll for every win and especially every upset.

Since I have no idea what your post even means, questioning your sanity seems wise.

I guess what i am pleased about is the fact that Jeff will be in the room. Throughout college football he has respect from coaches and athletic administrators at every level. In other words (and to steal a line from an old stock brokerage firm's commercial) when he speaks the people in the room will listen.

Even though MT did not play Southern Miss back when Bower was there; I remember him as a solid FB Coach. Glad to see him placed on the CFP Committee. It certainly does no harm to the Non-Cartel Programs and it adds someone with credibility from the Non-Cartel Ranks!

I disagree (especially with someone like Bower on the committee).
I think it's more like a 12.5% chance - something well within the realm of possibility, even expected to happen once under the current 8 year contract.

I figure that around half the time there's an unbeaten G5. Half of those seasons they might have strong enough SOS to get top 5 consideration, and half of those times they might have the resume or cred to tip the balance.

Just my gut feel, and I could be off here. We'll know in six years if anyone gets close or in. Of course it should be a better arrangement if the playoff expands.

In what world is something with a 1 in 8 chance "well within the realm of possibility", let alone "expected to happen"?

You will never see a G5 member in the 4 team playoff. With the way the Big XII lost their **** over being left out in 2014, you have lost your mind if you believe that Jeff Bower is 1/13th of the committee that we'll see two P5 conferences watching from home to make way for a G5 team in the playoff.

1/8 any given year (IMO). Over 8 years it might really happen. I think it will happen once by 2021.

Example: Houston Cougars just finished this year in the top ten.
Think they've got another run in them? They play OU in Houston this September. Of course OU will win by 3TD. (Just like FSU was going to curb stomp them UH on NYD.)

But What if Houston is better this year than last? Then they might actually beat OU and run the table (including home against Louisville late in the year).
What's BigXII's argument if the 13-0 team that beats their defending champion wants to take their playoff spot back?
And There are others in G5 with the schedule and cred that could pull this off, including a team 2 years removed from a Fiesta win that's got Michigan on the road in 2016.

I will say the only way there could ever be a chance of a G5 in the 4-team playoff is with a 13-0 season. But if there's enough good wins in that 13 then anything can happen.

Also worth saying that 13-0 would NOT have gotten Houston in the dance this year. But next year they have better OOC and "cred".

In the 18 seasons since the advent of the BCS, there has been one single G5 team that I believe would have been more likely in than out and that's the 2010 TCU team that finished 3rd in the BCS standings.

TCU was 35-3 over the past three seasons and playing in the MWC with Utah and BYU, there's not an equivalent G5 conference today to the 2010 MWC.

The year before when TCU finished 4th and Boise 6th, the BCS put them in a bowl together, you don't think the CFP would have had any problem slotting them 5th and 6th?

The majority of the moves in college football in recent years have put more distance between the haves and have nots and you think they're going to give us 25% of the playoff one year?

I'd put a G5 in a 4 team CFP at slightly better odds than the Arkansas State to the Big XII rumor I read recently.

You make a good case here and I think you are right about what "they" will deny the G5 if they can get away with it. Maybe that 12% is about how often we see a worthy top 4 G5... But in reality only about 4-5% of the time (1 in 18, or 1/20, or 1/25) will they (we) be worthy enough to not be kept out.
