RE: Spotted in NOVA
Why we're still pushing that "Idea Fusion" crap is beyond me. Are we required to have a stupid slogan of some kind? There was one before idea fusion that wasn't much better. Seriously, it cracks me up when Ankerson refers to ODU as "An Idea-Fusion Community" during the football and basketball games.

Does anyone remember that one ad that was LITERALLY just "Idea Fusion" said over and over and over again? It was like a Head-On commercial, but somehow more annoying.

It really is outrageous how long it took ODU to have an ad that actually had shots on-campus.

RE: Spotted in NOVA
The worst commercial was the one of a giant group of people in an atrium somewhere on campus where they said (I think) "Idea Fusion" in an echo-y mess that was indecipherable. Then there is the one where the girl can't enunciate her words properly, or the one that ran for years with the professor and the "high tech" tool that was about 20 years old, and the list goes on. The new commercial, while not awesome, is the best so far.

The slogan before Idea Fusion was "Modern Thinking for the Modern Mind". I thought that was much better than idea fusion. At least it branded us as "modern", which is something our best programs, campus architecture, technology and push for more traditional aged students can support. I would think if I were a kid who wasn't drawn to fraternities, columns or centuries of tradition, but was into contemporary activities, high tech areas of study, a more urban campus etc that would be appealing.

I saved $5k taking 3 online classes over the summer for my on campus degree watching via a webcam instead of sitting in a room on campus. Out of state online pays instate tuition rates.

And that doesn't include room and board savings since I was home in NJ. It was great and the exact same class.

And there's nothing wrong with that. Many people have to do their degrees online for many life reasons and everyone doesn't have the privilege to do it the traditional way. I happen to think that providing access to higher education to more people is a good thing, even if it has to be online--just as Arizona State U and several others do very well.

I do think that ODU needs to work harder to market it's on-campus product though. And we should have marketed the satellite campus in Cascades better before closing it down. It's a function of the longstanding circumstance that ODU has always had--if it doesn't come easy, don't try to fight it.

I agree that there are massive problems with the world of online education as a whole, but those who lay all of the responsibility for these diploma factories like Phoenix, and those who think the people who get those 18 month degrees should also be pointing their fingers at the businesses that REQUIRE a degree in order to promote longtime high performing employees. Those companies are the ones that are forcing many of these people to get useless degrees. As Ever mentioned, it is far too often an HR checkbox that is required for promotion or getting in the door for an interview, and it is a complete waste of everyone's time and money. I know of one local Fortune 500 company that even has Bryant & Stratton come on property and teach classes to employees so that they can quickly get a degree without leaving the office. What purpose does this serve? If someone is promoteable, why do you need this worthless diploma to actually promote them?

Bingo. We are over credentialized (is that a word) as a society. You even need a masters degree to teach my son's 1st grade class or a bachelors with a useless certificate. Unnecessary.
