RE: Scarbo: Whose Hoops State Is It? Only UAB Making History
Auburn has the bragging rights so far this year, especially if you're just judging head to head performance. However, I think UAB has the easiest path to the big dance, as I don't think bama or auburn will get an at large or win their conference tournament. UAB is also a different team from when they lost by one point to auburn on the road. We'd have a good shot to win a game in the big dance, as well. Not sure bama or auburn would. We will see how it all plays out.

AU's Bruce Pearl is doing well in his third season and Bama's coach is making progress in his first. With BBHC Haase making substantial improvement in UAB's BB recruiting and record, he is right on schedule to make the state sit up and take notice of UAB as a third state D1 power. The last 4 seasons of this decade will illustrate how well this trend develops if all 3 coaches make it to 2020 in their present jobs.

Personally, I think UAB is a better team, but, you can't take anything from Auburn. They weren't scared to play UAB, and it paid off for them. And, they've beaten some high profile, ranked teams. Alabama can sit down and shut up until they are willing to play everyone in the state like Auburn.

Nothing describes Alabama mentality better than to say UAB hasn't lost a basketball game since the day the Iron Bowl was played.

Jeez.

That "mentality" was illustrated a few years ago when Hoover HS was invited to play in the Herbstriet Invitational Challenge on TV. Since that game was on Sunday, the AHSCA denied them permission to play in that game (they played instead on the Saturday before and not on TV). The affirmative chorus from state politicians was loud and supportive of that action.

As it happened, that same season, Alabama was invited to its first bowl game under Saban - and it was played on SUNDAY. Not a peep was to be heard from any of those strident state voices that had been so religiously moved in August. Without a single comment, Bama played in that bowl game.

FINAL SCORE in head to head competition in Alabama:
#1 Crimson Tide football
#2 GOD & His Sabbath
#3 Hoover HS football

AHSAA rules state that no contests are to be played on Sunday. (Rule 3 Section 2, Sunday Play). That applies to Alabama schools in the AHSAA. Colleges are not subject to those rules.

The Crimson Tide did not invent the described "mentality" -- it was the Alabama political culture regarding that team that resulted in that score. While it is true that the high school rules don't apply to state colleges, does that explain why the Sabbath only applies to high school teams? I would think Sundays are Sundays for all schools in the state. Maybe God didn't read the fine print.

If you really want to get technical and talk about fine print...
1. Sunday is not the Sabbath
2. Sabbath was intended for those living under Jewish law. That probably doesnt apply to most people in Alabama.
3. Most Christians who argue for Sabbath laws have little awareness that under the new covenant of their own Bible there is no longer a day assigned as Sabbath, just as there is no longer a temple or a holy of holies, or sacrifice system or veil between man and god. Those who connect with Christ are free to choose when to worship or work or rest, or play football, ideally as they walk out each day in close relationship with the spirit of god.

So if you want get into the fine print...then relax and use your immense freedom wisely. Just a thought.

You can twist anything if you try hard enough.

That's like saying employees and church goers generally applaud Chick-Fil-A for closing on Sundays, but yet some of those employees and church goers went to an Atlanta Falcons game on a Sunday. Therefore, the Falcons are greater than GOD.

Come on. How about this: In the USA, freedom is greater than someone else's vision of what God wants. The AHSAA is free to make its rules for its members, and so are colleges and the NFL.

Any chance he gets he will discuss Alabama football and how bad conservatives are. When he can combine the two, even better.
