The Rice Owls come into tonight's game at 6-12 and 1-4.

Their best road win is a good one, as they upset New Mexico, 90-89. In that game, they were down 80-65 with six minutes left.

On the flip side, they have lost at San Francisco, Houston Baptist, USA, UTEP, UTSA, and North Texas.

In their two home games last week, they beat WKU, 83-73, and lost to Marshall, 94-90.

KenPom.com has it UAB 84 - Rice 69.

RE: Rice
Rice has really good guards and that's what gives UAB problems. I expect them to attempt to drive our guards to the basket. They also shoot a lot of 3s and teams seem to have great success against us in that area. I think this will be a tougher game than many think and that it'll all come down to UAB's defensive guard-play...

RE: Rice
the big Russian center is a shot blocker. they hit their free throws so don't put them at the line. neutralize the guards and we should be OK.

RE: Rice
Size-wise, they're another equal match-up. Having Lee, Mehinti, Cokley, and Sullivan rotating inside will be our advantage against their big guy. We're a deeper team than them as well, but I remember them having motors that didn't quit at the C-USA tournament.

Rice will fight us tooth & nail to the final buzzer... have to get that early lead & keep our foot on the pedal.

RE: Rice
They spread you out a lot. They mainly run a 4 out set with one big ole country fed guy that they both post up and bring out to set screens, creating a wide open lane.
The guy they start at "power forward" is a 6-5 Euro who leads their team in 3 point attempts and 3pt% One of our big guys will almost always be stuck guarding him when we play man, so i think we may see a lot of zone to combat that.

The good news is that they are undersized. Their 6th man is their best backup big and he is only 6'7 210 pounds or so. He is their third leading scorer, but isnt going to be able to guard a big in the post and has fouled out of three games so far this year trying to. My bet is that we are going to try and get their one true big in foul trouble and then punish them down low.

Like many in CUSA(Charlotte, Marshall, for example), they basically play 4 guards.

What is the right technique for guarding against the trey while not getting into foul trouble doing it? This game may turn into a drill for that skill.

The best way is to deny Evans the ball and make him work extra hard to find it.
