That is no bad, we are a division one school. And D1 coaches put in a lot more hours compared to a D3 coach.

I guess my question is if the going rate for a FCS position coach is 50k, can a position coach at the DIII level exist purely on his coaches salary? Or is he usually a teacher too with a coaching stipend (like in high school)

Most D3 staffs have around 5 full time coaches. Most of these coaches have other duties at the school (teaching a class or two) but don't get compensated much for those duties. It's often a 60 hour/week job for around 40k/year and many of those coaches do not receive benefits. Price you pay for having a "fun" job.

The remainder of coaches on staff are GAs and Part Time. Most GAs at that level get tuition and 3-5k.. Housing and meals sometimes. Part time guys usually get around 4-5k.

I would say it depends on your home situation. A guy I know coached at Bridgewater a couple years ago but had no family and lived close by, so the money wasn't a big deal. He just focused on coaching football. It's hard to find a coach who doesn't but in 50 plus hours of work on the college level.

RE: Football Assistant Coaches thread
I was a D3 assistant track & field coach in the early 90's for a couple of years (Oglethorpe University in Atlanta) and I was paid exactly $0 (I volunteered) and put in about the same amount of time as I do as a HS coach during the week and had to travel to out of town meets on some weekends (but that was usually fun and they did cover my hotel and food). There are alot of D1 assistant track coaches right now who are volunteers and get paid nothing. I remember when Ralph Sampson was and assiatnt under Lefty at JMU and he got something like $16K. $50K as a position coach for D1 football for a new coach I would call decent to start.

Did we ever receive an actual copy of the MH contract? There may have been some bonus money not included in his deal that EW had in his which allows for the additional $90K to be paid for MH's assistants.

The O will be slower and less productive, the D will probably not be better for a number of reasons. Results will reflect the profile of the new and holdover staff -- neither uptempo nor innovative. Stodgy is an adjective I might suggest. Though Mike Houston is a really good guy. Wish the team well. Oh, well.

Um, what about when you said this? I don't think your opinion means a whole lot to me.

I guess this is as good of a place as any to post this.

If Coach Bowers son's ends up becoming Cal's starting QB this season, I may have to start casually watching their games if they're on.
