...You don't see any of the top programs run from the best.
FSU did when they joined the ACC. So yeah, weve seen it.
Was the SEC "the best" back in 1990? Sure it was better than the ACC, but FSU as an independent had a schedule that was as good as and could well be argued actually better than a typical SEC schedule throughout the 80s.
And the Noles were keeping Miami and Florida on its schedule and adding the 81 and 90 National Champions Clemson and Georgia Tech respectively.
Sorry, I don't think anyone can accuse FSU of running away from anything.
Cheers,
Neil
Was the SEC better than the ACC in terms of football in 1990? Let's look at the final AP poll...
1990 Final AP Poll
School Record (W-L-T) Points
1 Colorado (39) 11-1-1 1,475
2 Georgia Tech (20) 11-0-1 1,441
3 Miami (FL) (1) 10-2-0 1,388
4 Florida State 10-2-0 1,303
5 Washington 10-2-0 1,246
6 Notre Dame 9-3-0 1,179
7 Michigan 9-3-0 1,025
8 Tennessee 9-2-2 993
9 Clemson 10-2-0 950
10 Houston 10-1-0 940
11 Penn State 9-3-0 907
12 Texas 10-2-0 887
13 Florida 9-2-0 863
14 Louisville 10-1-1 775
15 Texas A&M 9-3-1 627
16 Michigan State 8-3-1 610
17 Oklahoma 8-3-0 452
18 Iowa 8-4-0 370
19 Auburn 8-3-1 288
20 Southern California 8-4-1 266
21 Mississippi 9-3-0 253
22 Brigham Young 10-3-0 246
23 Virginia 8-4-0 188
24 Nebraska 9-3-0 185
25 Illinois 8-4-0 146
The ACC had 2 current member teams in the top 10 to the SEC's one. Of course, there were also 2 future members as well. During this time period, the SEC had 10 members to the ACC's 7 (FSU made 9, the same year the SEC expanded to 12). So the ACC's 3 out of 7 (43%) ranked was better than the SEC's 4 out of 10 (40%) EVEN THEN. So no, FSU wasn't running, it was joining the BEST college football conference in the Southeast - at the time.

If FSU did leave the conference would they be accused from running away again?

RE: So, what will ACC do now?
With regard to academics again, the College of Medicine at FSU was begun with limited goals - it was the 1st new medical school in the US in 20 years when it opened - so you cannot decry the fact that it trains general practice/community physicians. I personally knew their 1st Dean - before he became their 1st Dean he ran a biology lab across the hall from the physics lab where I worked. Also, certain programs like physics are better than at other public/private schools across the state - better even than the one at UF! So that will vary from program to program as it does at any school. The medical school is also the courtesy of the Chemistry department - a team there succeeded in synthesizing the anti-cancer compound taxol from the Pacific Yew tree bringing in a lot of $$$ - saving lives and probably saving the tree. It may also surprise you to know that the entrance requirements at FSU are somewhat "higher" than at UF, and our football players are subject to those any student must possess. FSU is also more cosmopolitan and liberal in outlook and history than Alabama, Georgia, Florida, etc., and has the highest % of AFAM students of any Florida public university I have read.
With regard to the ACC situation, I am hopeful that there will be more $$$ from either a TV channel or increased rights fees as Swofford mentioned in an interview earlier this year. Clemson is in it to win it, and the moves at Va Tech, Miami, Syracuse, and Virginia all tell me this can be a much stronger football conference in a few years. It looks like everyone is trying - even Wake Forest has an IPF and a coach who is continuously beating the bushes for players, and Duke finally removed the track from around their football field and made the stadium into a horseshoe. When Swofford made his grand tour around the ACC at the time the GOR was signed, I understand his message to the schools was that 85% of our money comes from football so they should get with it!

I always enjoy your blog, Hokie Mark, and perspectives like this are a big reason why. Fascinating!
The Seminoles face both Miami and UF in football every year. For many years, 1990 definitely included, to be state champion in Florida was to be a national title contender automatically. The state itself was the toughest 'conference' of all--and the Seminoles were the only team in it playing a full schedule.
Many factors went into Florida State's decision to join the ACC. Then as now, the SEC was overhyped. Then as now, the ACC deserved better press. Meanwhile, the Seminoles weren't ducking anybody; they played Miami every year.
Thanks for demonstrating all this yet again.

Don't forget they were also playing LSU and Auburn during that same time.
