Interesting basketball stat related to rule changes
I found this stat today related to the rule changes. I read a lot of complaints that shortening the shot clock would make the game messier and lead to more turnovers, which would not reduce scoring.

Here is an interesting stat at the midway point of this basketball season.

At this point there are 57 teams averaging over 80 points a game (UAB is at 78 or 79). At the end of last season, there were only five teams averaging over 80 points.

Would be interesting to see the shooting percentage comparison of those same teams.

More shots with an even less % of shooting could still lead to more points.

Also, I suspect that new rules regarding calling games closer which leads to more free throws has increased scoring. However, the calling games closer has not been consistent.

I thought it was a pretty good, and, more importantly, healthy change for the game. It's not drastic enough to destroy more methodical play, and, even though it's just a few seconds, those are seconds not spent passing around the perimeter before the set play.

The close hand check calls from last year do not appear to be being called anymore. Also we don't seem to have to worry as much about players fouling out in the first half this year.

Could be our depth, but I suspect that some of the ticky tack fouls aren't being called as much.

We go 10 deep every night, so that helps with keeping us out of foul trouble. I think it was the Troy game when we had every big record 2 or 3 fouls in the first half. Had it not been for our front-court depth, our bigs would have fouled out early in the 2nd half. But Haase was able to spread those fouls out and the bigs didn't have to fear being physical late in the game.

I love the shorter shot clock.
