RE: Let the depresssion sink deep
Not depressed at all about basketball. I still think this team is going to be really good. 4 losses with leads in the last 5 minutes... 3 of them being 1 possession losses to really good teams. A couple breaks go our way and we're sitting in the top 15 and everyone is thrilled. To me the biggest disappointment I had was the falloff of the defense for much of the first two months, but that seems to be coming around. If the defense gets back to where it needs to be this team should run off a really impressive streak in this conference.
Sitting in the kenpom top 30 right now. I thought we'd be a kenpom top 15-20 team... it has been disappointing so far, but I've seen plenty to make me think this team can be playing top 10 caliber basketball by seasons end.

They very well may turn it around Mark. There is no reason not to given most of the team is back from last year and last years team was ncaa caliber. What concerns me is the AAC is bad this year. Really bad and so we have precious few games in conference to build a resume with and we already lost one game we shouldn't have (Temple at home) and blew it vs one of the few teams that will give us a 'resume win' (SMU). The deck is stacked against us right now. If we are going to make it, they can't be screwing around and end up 18-12 or whatever. That kind of record won't cut it coming out of the AAC. Big East, yes, AAC, no. They are going to have to go on a some kind of run and we have ZERO room for error now. I just don't see this team operating with zero room for error at this point. Hope I'm wrong and you are right.

I am reminded of the old saying "If wishes and buts, were candy and nuts it would be Christmas every day."
Almost this, if that, could have.
The bottom line is all those games were losses.

Nobody is denying that. Their resume is lacking because all those were losses. However when you are evacuating a team going forward you actually have to evaluate how they play, what their potential is and what it will mean going forward, not just end results. That's why Rpi has virtually no predictive value and systems like kenpom and sagarin predictor have a ton of it.

Sampson gambled almost his entire roster by going after mostly JUCO/transfers (some troubled) so UH can win quickly (sacrifice its future) so he could bolt to a much better job.
Now UH has lost 4 conf games in a row...players are getting suspended and with the loss at home yesterday to then winless USF, the team could be slipping into quicksand.

There are few if any, dominant programs out there this year. So, if a team is going to have an extended period where they under-perform compared to expectations, this is the year.
I've got my positive attitude back. and I think our recent play is improving enough for an extended run.
Mark. Besides sagarin and kenpom, are there any other sites you look to for stats and information?

RE: Let the depresssion sink deep
I'm not ruling UC out just yet. We had high hopes for this year and the bottom line is this:
1. There is time for the team to get its act together (maybe Memphis was the start)
2. There are no elite teams this year. UC played (and almost beat) some of the better (not best) teams out there this year. This tourney (if we can get in) is going to be wide open and we have a team full of guys who already have tasted and won in the ncaa.
I guess I'm a sucker and love pain but I'm not ruling out that we make the ncaa and win a few games just yet.
