This is OK, and our prerogative as fans. But let's be transparent about it. Some of us would think he was bad no matter what he did, because some of us made our minds up about that years ago.
Not saying those folks are wrong (or right, necessarily). Just saying "why talk about it as though we're actually talking about the facts of the situation?" We're not. We're venting our long-held frustration at the coach at every single opportunity.
I wouldn't blame him for getting a T, heck even two, but there are times when you get them and times when you don't. Pastner would have only drawn my ire for a T had he picked it up late (under 4 minutes to go) when it was a 3 or 4 point game.
He should have got one in the first half when the officials called the charge on his star player, negating the basket and what should have been an and one. There were several other times when we picked up charges, or no call were made on South Carolina. Once they pulled Shaq to the ground resulting in a Tiger turnover, no call, Pastner is quiet as a church mouse.
I like Pastner but I am sick of watching him lose games. I have bit my tongue for 6 years now and watch him waste some great players. It obviously doesn't hurt him enough to lose these games and that alone tells me he will never be a great college coach.
Great players and coaches cant stand to lose, so they coach and play their hearts out to win. He is a great recruiter but a lousy coach and motivator. We have a potential lottery pick on this team, had another one transfer out, (whom Pastner didn't even speak with in person over an entire summer) and Pastner will maybe lead this team to one or two NIT home wins this season.
Really and truly, despite the record, our program is as low as I can remember since Kirk came here in '79 or whatever it was. Even then we weren't down but a few seasons, ala the John Gunn era. I guess what makes it more frustrating is that we were at the top when Cal bailed and CJP signed on. When contrasted the fall is even further than any other decline I can think of. Finch, even in poor health in his decline had 5-10x more fire than CJP.
What is Pastner afraid of? No one expects him to be Cal but man, get fired up. Our only hope as I see it is that Pastner gets mad at the criticism and decides to try a different approach to prove the naysayers wrong. Personally I think he is too hard headed to do that, (it's why 20 players have transferred out) and it is beginning to appear he will never figure it out.
Pastner needs to get a stern message delivered to him that this type of coaching and motivation is unacceptable. The fans are speaking, but I'm not sure about the administration and big money boosters. I know several boosters really like Pastner and I haven't made it a point to ask them how they really felt.
If we are stuck with Pastner, well so be it, but you can't make me like it. I know when a team is well coached and when they aren't. I see the development Papa Lawson has brought to the staff along with Stoudamire, but Pastner is still sailing this ship. It appears we are headed in a similar direction to the SMS Titanic, full steam ahead.
Glad we are starting to become a football school, that is really where the money is anyway. We still have great talent on this basketball team, I just never thought I would see Memphis fall to mediocrity in basketball. It cannot be blamed on the players, this is on the head coach, who may have the hardest head of any first time NCAA head coach I have ever seen.
Maybe he will get lucky a sign a Laurinburg type class that already knows how to play and add a CDR or Derrick Rose to it. It certainly covered up Cals deficiencies, for all but 2:09, but at least Cal could motivate and get the players to play together.
Sorry guys I probably shouldn't post when I'm frustrated like this. Thanks for letting me vent. The saddest thing is I really do like Pastner, its just I love my Tigers and the city they represent more.
