I have a dud Soviet 85mm anti-aircraft shell that was extracted from my father's F4 after a bombing run on the Red River bridges in June 1972.

I have the saber my great-grandfather carried when he rode against the Russians in August 1914 as a Rittmeister in the Imperial and Royal Austro-Hungarian 2nd "Prinz Leopold" Hussar Regiment. Perfectly balanced, and still takes an edge.

And I have a piece of concrete I extracted from the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989.

That is cool. I was getting hammered on Fiori Kaserne in Aschaffenburg when the wall fell -- buddy of mine was ETS'ing and flying back to the states, and we caught some of the wall 'coming down' on AFN on a bar TV. It was quite a time. What I really remember is that not long afterward the entrepreneurs in the military were claiming they'd gone to Berlin and gotten pieces of the wall and for $20 you could have a baggie full of busted concrete -- genuine Berlin wall, supposedly.

One regret, never made it to Berlin during my stay in FRG.

Yep. All over Europe, too. But there was a LOT of Wall to go around.

How much more is this silver certificate compared to a dollar? What does it mean anyway. I'm completely perplexed.

RE: Do you have any cool pieces of history?
You guys have lot's of very cool stuff here!

We've got a early 1800's musket made in Harpers Ferry, dated 1821, I think, haven't looked in a while.

Dining room table that is supposedly one of only two made, the other is in Monticello, so we're told. But apparently my Great Aunt was a bit of a story teller, so will have to confirm that some day. We DO know it dates about correctly, somewhere around 250 years in the Family.

A original charcoal portrait of family member that was Ambassador to Ecuador, somewhere around 1790 or so.

The wooden chest the Patterson family packed everything they owned and could bring with them when they immigrated here for wherever they were, forgotten no. Europe somewhere, he went on to be a Founder and first president of one of the large Public U's in Kentucky, forgotten that part too by now, haven't written the paper regarding him since around 6th grade. 03-thumbsup

Lot's lots of family antiques, furniture, china, crystal, all sorts of silver, beds etc etc. Our family(s) go WAY back, and the biggest thing was my Mother was the ONLY child of her Mother OR her 4 Sisters, all of whom married but had no kids.

Very unusual for way back then, and all that stuff that was in the families got passed down to her.

None... other than come slight collector value. The dollar is not backed up by anything anymore. It is only backed by a promise. At one time that bill was actually backed up by an amount of silver. Later we went to a fractional system and then Nixon abolished it all together.

actually it was fdr that dropped the gold standard to....it was nixon that eliminated the fixed value of 35usd/oz.....that resulted in the current strategy of increasing debt and systematic controlled inflation.....central banking.....what a godddammm joke of a destroyer of an economy it will eventually become....

watch what happens to the yuan as it starts making a move against our service based socialist driven economy.....the undeveloped nations have an advantage.....most are just too blind to see it coming....

don't you wish you had invested in gold in '74 when Ford allowed bullion to be purchased by the gp?

....it's only a matter of when the cookie's crumbs all flow through the colon at this point....

sorry to derail the thread.....

I have a flute used by my great (great great?) grandfather during the Civil War. He was too young to enlist, so he was part of the children who played instruments during battles.

Have any of you tossed out something that you wish now you had kept?

Pistol Pete use to come to Campbell BBall camp every year. He regularly put on demonstrations highlighting all the ball handling drills he did. It must have been about 1968 when I was in camp. Needless to say we were extremely pumped up to see him and we literally chased him out of the gym. He retreated into the coaches office and we waited outside the door. He climbed out the window, but someone spotted him and we ran after him again. When it was clear further pursuit was hopeless I returned to the spot under the window of the coaches office and scooped up some dirt. So I had dirt that Pistol Pete walked on. It was very important to me at that point but over time it seemed silly and I eventually threw it away. Now I wish I had kept it.

My brother did pick up a yearbook on e-bay from his lost year. His grades were poor and he couldn't get accepted at NC State where his father coached so they enrolled him at Salemburg Academy in eastern NC. He was the table tennis champ at the school that year. Of course Press then went to LSU to coach and took Pete with him.

My dad went to school with him at Broughton HS in Raleigh. I think he was a year older.

I'm not religious, and I personally don't own any personal pieces of history, but my family does... but I do have a good story. Some of you right extremist might enjoy it, but considering it came from Mexico, you would have deported it and built a wall.

The Tunic of Juan Diego (The replacement). The original was moved from La basilica De Nuestra Senora in the 1920's by the church (actually it was my family, who were devoted Catholics), because the Mexican government believed that the church was gaining too much power. It was transported to NY, NY and kept in hiding for several years. The tunic which took its place during that time span, is located in a family home in Mexico City, however, the church is asking that the replacement for the ORIGINAL be donated to the church.

Correspondence between Einstein and my Great Uncle. The letters are about a disagreement over one of his theories being shared with the public.

My Great Grandfather, Pedro Lascurain, had the honor of serving the shortest presidency in the world. He served as president of Mexico for less then one hour. I challenge the punk ass trump to any debate... it is in my blood.

My wife goes to estate sales, and we've got literally CRATES of old stamps and stamped envelopes all the way back to the late 1800's. One of the valuable stamps I've run across (I have thousands to go) is this one... and we've got 2 of em.

It's an Indian "Ajanta Cave Elephant" stamp... mint condition ones go for around $600.

I thought of this with the thread title. No, I'm not the urologist:

(Of course, it's from the Post)

The strange journey of Napoleon’s p****
by Ishaan Tharoor June 19, 2015

Frenchman Frank Samson poses for a portrait in the French troops' bivouac, while taking part in an re-enactment as French Emperor Napoleon as part of the bicentennial celebrations for the Battle of Waterloo, in Ligny, Belgium, June 13, 2015. (Yves Herman/Reuters)

This week marked the bicentenary of the Battle of Waterloo. The epic clash saw the final defeat of the French emperor Napoleon, who, despite his supposedly "diminutive" stature, was a bogeyman for British children, a military genius for the ages, and a towering figure on the world stage.

But after Waterloo, Napoleon was, well, cut to size. He abdicated power and was eventually captured by the British and placed in permanent exile on the remote, stony Atlantic isle of St. Helena. There, he died in 1821, in circumstances that are debated to this day.

An autopsy followed his death. During the procedure, according to some accounts, Napoleon's little Napoleon, as well as other vital organs, including his heart and stomach, was excised by the doctor. This was either an accident or done on purpose, depending on whom you believe.

[The forgotten story of how Napoleon wanted to start a new life in America]

It shouldn't be surprising, though, that there was curiosity in Napoleon's remains. For most of human history, we have been fascinated and obsessed with the stray body parts of famous people. Napoleon's second valet, present at the postmortem, wrote in his memoirs that the Corsican doctor, "taking advantage of a moment when the eyes of the English were not fixed on the body, had taken two little pieces from a rib."

These and other pieces of Napoleon supposedly came into the hands of an Italian priest. That apparently included the French commander's *****.

From there, the trail of Napoleon's alleged member gets a bit cloudy. It went from the priest's family to a London bookseller -- the item was politely listed in a catalog as "a mummified tendon" -- to a counterpart across the pond in Philadelphia. In 1927, these effects were exhibited in New York at the Museum of French Arts.

A Time magazine journalist attended the event, gazed at Napoleon's *****, and was not all that impressed. The publication likened it to "a maltreated strip of buckskin shoelace." Another newspaper described it as a "shriveled eel."

The idea of a "Napoleon complex" emerged well after his death, but perhaps we can understand its origins. A documentary by Britain's Channel 4 last year went on to cruelly spell it out.

Eventually, the item believed to be Napoleon's ***** was bought in an auction in 1977 by John J. Lattimer, a leading American urologist. It has since remained in the late Lattimer's household outside New York City. The video (in the article from this story in the link), with Evan Lattimer, his daughter, is worth watching. (Start at the 2-minute mark for the not-so-big reveal -- the organ is not shown on camera.)

Forensic analysis conducted on the specimen confirms that it is a *****, though it's still not certain it was a part of a Bonaparte.

"All the internal structures are perfect," says the urologist's daughter.

"Wow, the stuff you find in New Jersey," concludes the interviewer.

Napoleon's exile in St Helena is a personal interest of mine. Not so much Napoleon himself, just the exile and the location.

It's an odd comment from the Post about his death being debated today. In the past yes, including arsenic poisoning from the wallpaper of all things, but today it is pretty well established Napoleon died of nothing more exotic than stomach cancer.
