This is a very individual thing, no teams here. It's basically going to be set up like a sports league, each week you'll have a head to head matchup, and the winner is whoever loses the most (by percent of original weight) by the end of the week.

Also, I'm going to cut off signups now, we are at 26 participants. Now I have to figure out how to set up the league...

Actually if we could get two more that'd make my life a lot easier, we could do 4 divisions of 7 teams...Maybe I'll leave it open until the end of the day.

Crap, I just saw this today. I'm interested in joining if not too late. If not, I'll follow along just for fun. I technically started on 1/2/16 and have dropped 8 lbs as of my official weigh in day on 1/16. Looking to shed significant weight.

While we haven't yet started (initial weigh-in is tomorrow), I've already got the schedule, divisions, rules etc. set up for our current format. Sorry!

Don't sweat it. I'll follow along if everyone still posts in this thread. Hopefully next year I won't need to worry about it!

regardless which diet or nutrition plan you use and regardless what exercise plan you employ, if you're allowing yourself to consumer sugar on a regular basis -- then you're not serious about losing weight.

Sugar is poison. Sugar is cigarettes. Same thing.

FWIW, about 20 years ago I was diagnosed as morbidly obese, well over 400 pounds, and had a heart condition. I was early 30s, and my doc said I had 3 or so more years to live at most if I didn't lose a lot of weight, fast. My heart wasn't going to be able to stand much more of pumping blood for that amount of body mass.

This was just before gastric bypass arrived, so I had to do it the old fashioned way, diet and exercise. Really, a whole lot of dieting and a little exercise, since my heart didn't permit very much. In 14 months I lost 230 pounds and I have kept it off ever since. All of it, all the time, no yo-yo. I haven't been overweight on any day since 1998. Am 215 right now, perfect for my height and build. I could have been the Jared dude from Subway (and now in jail, LOL), actually lost my weight a year before he did.

Point is, I did it strictly by counting calories. I went on a 1200 calorie a day diet. Ate whatever I wanted, so long as at the end of the day I didn't go over 1200 calories. I remember some days I ate lots of sugar, like 5 Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Didn't matter because whether I ate sugar or fat or protein, i counted the calories and stayed at or under 1200 for the day. Well, not every single day. On Thanksgiving, Christmas, and my birthday that year, I took the day off and stuffed myself, LOL.

Bottom line: Weight loss isn't about restricting fat, or carbs, or sugar, it is all about calories. It's math, calorie intake vs calorie expenditure. If you are fat, it's because over a period of time you intook more cals than you expended, so to lose weight you have to do the opposite.

If avoiding sugar helps you keep calories down, then avoid sugar. But remember that when it comes to weight loss, avoiding sugar is just a means to an end. The end is avoiding calories.

I think this thread served its purpose, so I don't have to worry about derailing it.

First of all, thanks for being open about your situation and how you resolved it. You obviously made a great investment in your health and I think its a great achievement.

To the point, there are many, many reasons I disagree with tracking the total amount of heat that the food you eat in a day would give off if it were burned in an oven. (Calories)

But I also don't want to write a huge long post, if you don't have any desire to discuss it. No worries either way!

RE: CSNBBS - Weight Loss League Interest Thread
Best weight loss advice I've ever heard is simple. If you want to lose weight to, say, 180 pounds, eat a diet (number of calories) that a 180 pound man would eat to maintain that weight, and you'll eventually get there.

I'm not a big believer in magic foods or radical changes in diet. I tend towards a paleo diet, partly because it appeals to me.

But, I've never worried to much about weight until a couple of years ago, so I'm fairly new to the game.

I won't go in to extended details but weight loss (or gain), in its simplest form, is a relatively easy concept.
Gain Weight = Take in more calories than you burn
Lose Weight = Burn more calories than you take in

Now, if you want to go in to breaking down calories, saturated/unsaturated fats, etc. the conversation could go on and on.

So, you could try this race in Sloveneia if you need to burn a few extra calories:

This 'vertical race' in Slovenia is one of the most difficult in the world
Story and editing by A.C. Fowler

The Red Bull 400 is an annual 400 meter race, but what sets it apart is that the track is at an almost vertical incline, on a Slovenian hill usually used for ski jumping. The race, which requires the use of both hands and feet, is absolutely grueling. 300 participants had the chance to run the classic athletics distance of 400 meters almost vertically up to the Planica ski jumping hill. Check out the highlights from the prestigious event!
