Breaking news: Three Clemson players banned from Orange Bowl
http://www.greenvilleonline.com/story/sp.../78052398/

Three Clemson football players have been suspended from Thursday's Orange Bowl, according to multiple media reports.

Deon Cain, Jay Jay McCullough and Ammon Lakip have reportedly been sent home.

Cain, a freshman, is one of the Tigers' starting receivers leads the Tigers in yards per reception at 17.1. He is tied for third on the team with 34 receptions.

lakip is the FG kicker who was busted doing cocaine last summer. he had been kicking our extra points b/c the starter misses a lot of them

Didn't Cain get suspended earlier in the year? He's turning into a pain in the rear.

Why would you do this as a player on a potential championship team??? How dumb are these kids? I just don't get it...

he was suspsened for the Miami game. Clemson is stacked at WR so it shouldn't matter but he is the fastest one I believe.

i could see us losing by 1 point b/c our starting kicker misses an extra point that the crackhead backup would have made. lol

Just turned TV over to ESPN and caught Mac Brown talking about this situation. I have really come to like his take on matters.

They get stupid because the NCAA actually piss tests the playoff (and before that BCS title game,) and they hammer you 6 months for those fails. Schools give players a few chances before they're publicly punished.

It's beyond dumb. Not only could it cost your team a chance at a title, but it makes your program look dirty.

Lakip is a senior so his career was over after the playoffs regardless.

McCullough has been a huge disappointment, primarily . He's a RS JR but has been recruited over both last recruiting class and the upcoming one so I don't expect him to be back either. He's behind true freshman Garrett Williams on the depth chart and had RSFR Cannon Smith breathing down his neck. I expect that he will be asked to transfer and if he refuses he'll be dismissed. If anything this will help because we are short on scholarships in this recruiting class and could add a player that actually contributes.

Cain was suspended before the Miami game for an attitude issue. If history shows he'll have to work his way back into the good graces.

Lakip is the big loss because Huegel can't seem to kick XPs. Cain is a weapon but before he got dinged up late in the season Ray-Ray McCloud was coming on. He's healthy and Artavis Scott is healthy after having some scope work done to his knee right after the ACCCG. Between those two, Charone Peake, Germone Hopper, and Hunter Renfrow we can overcome it. Probably hurts Cain more than us because this is his first year as a WR and could use as much experience as possible

They are just as dumb as all the other 18 to 22 year old males, no more, no less. Never over estimate their decision making abilities.

This is a geopolitical issue. We gotta examine where these kids are coming from. A lot are coming from broken homes and some of the toughest neighborhoods in America. It's easy to assume that some are going to take the free meal ticket out of the ghetto and not change who they are. It's frustrating when a player from our team pops multiple drug tests and ends up being suspended or kicked off the team. Many of these players had little to no guidance and many didn't have a father figure. It's really easy for them to fall into the trap once they get out of their homes that they've known for 17-19 years. Sure it's easy for us to say "how can _________ be so stupid?" But we don't know the kids, other than the jersey and name.

No it's not, it's a dumb*** issue. Players know the rules and the consequences and these three selfishly chose to break them. Now they suffer the consequences.

I'll just assume your dad worked a traditional 9-5, your mom was a stay at home mom, and you didn't experience sh*t in life other than a traditional middle class home.

My Dad died when I was 11 and my Mom worked 9-5 Mon-Fri and every other Saturday at a local store. I sacrificed going to my dream college to ensure that my younger brother would have money to go to college himself. I woke up at 0500 every morning to feed animals before I went to school or church, and worked until dark and sometimes after dark every day after school that I didn't have practice. I worked at least 6 hours every Saturday unless we went to a Clemson game then I worked when we got home. You decide how much of a **** life that was, but by my book it was far from ideal.

Never did drugs, never got arrested.....guess I should have not taken personal responsibility for my actions like everybody else and blamed it on my upbringing. Nah....I like being able to look at myself in the mirror every morning and know I did things the right way.

Fair enough, and sorry to hear about your father. And no your childhood wasn't ideal. Although I didn't lose my father, but he was an over the road truck driver. My surroundings dealt with shootings every other day, including my own cousin getting shot. And that's the thing w/ many of these players, their parents, family, and friends are getting shot and the street life is the only thing they know. My hometown had maybe 5 stores that were open, and were only open during school hours. I worked in the mall and such, but it's unfortunate these kids become dealers/users. But it's not that simple to take a kid from a world of crime and expect them to suddenly follow rules. I didn't fall into the street life because I had parents that cared. Like I said, I had a cousin that got shot, and 2 on their way to prison. I could've easily followed their path if I didn't have guidance, and unfortunately many of these kids don't have that guidance.

Maybe colleges do this, maybe they don't, but if they don't, they need to do more counseling and have programs set up to prevent them from falling into doing the same things in college that they've done in high school.

RE: Breaking news: Three Clemson players banned from Orange Bowl
http://www.tigernet.com/story/football/S...ines-14453

Quote:Wide receiver Deon Cain, kicker Ammon Lakip and tight end Jay Jay McCullough won’t play in the game, and Swinney said that the Clemson careers of McCullough and Lakip are over. Both have faced suspensions recently – McCullough missed time at the end of last season and time this spring, while Lakip missed the first three games this season.

All three failed drug tests.

“If you don’t do the right things there are consequences,” Swinney said in final Orange Bowl Press Conference early Wednesday morning. “It’s simple. It’s not a complicated matter at all. We have 115 guys, and 112 did the right thing, and three didn’t do the right thing. Now they don’t have the opportunity, and they forego the privilege to be a part of the game. I hate it for them. They are the ones that have to deal with the consequences, and they are missing out on a great opportunity. There is not much to add other than I am proud of our team and how they have handled themselves. Unfortunately, three guys get the headlines.”

Swinney said the loss of Cain isn’t as bad as people think.

“Charone Peake is the starter at wide receiver, so nothing has changed there,” Swinney said. “Trevion Thompson is the backup and both have played a lot anyway. But Charone is the starter and nothing has changed. All those guys (suspended) are backups.”

Swinney said Cain will have the opportunity to come back and be a part of the football program, but McCullough and Lakip have seen their Clemson careers end.

“Deon can come back and if he does the right things he can be a part of the football program,” he said. “Ammon is a senior, and he will move on, and Jay Jay is a redshirt junior but he will have the chance to come back to school next week and graduate in the summer, and then he will move on. If he wants to play somewhere else next year that’s up to him.”
