It isn't like these decisions get made and they vacuum there hours and hours of meetings we're all players and their pluses and minuses are viewed on tape and discussed at North tea are viewed on tape and discussed at nausea. Even then these evaluations are not set in stone but rather are a fluid work in progress based on daily performance and improvement
Opinions are at the very core of athletics. These opinions and emotions are what put butts in the seats (& sell newspapers/create ratings). To be clear, I don't think anyone is saying their resume is better than that of any of NIU's paid coach. It's their paid profession.
The perfect world would be if the head coach were the Pied Piper and all of the fans just fell in line. Trouble is, no-one is that good - no matter how many hours they put in watching video and meeting with players/coaches. They all make decisions that are criticism worthy
Making a decision to move into that profession, opens one up for that criticism. It goes with the territory. It is a criticism laden profession and justifiably so.
If you break a playing time decision down into smaller pieces (at any level), most will give the incumbent the benefit of the doubt. Eventually, that benefit wanes to the point of a change being made. That playing time decision, at the margin/where the straw breaks the camel's back, is what separates individuals, fans and coaches. Some have a higher tolerance (for a number of reasons - veteran coach vs new coach, "my guy" vs. "his guy" etc...) than others.
My bottom line - criticism is to be expected, in all sports.
I'll end on this example. While not a playing time decision, it is an X & O/clock management decision. In tonight's beat down, as the 1st half wound down and we were getting paddled 31-7 and had a timeout left - why not use it to try and do SOMETHING - ANYTHING, get another play in... Carey decided otherwise. I and many others would criticize the decision, regardless of my resume. I don't care how much video the staff watched, don't care what their future plans are, don't care what they had for lunch. In a beat down of this nature, I would rather take a shot at the endzone than trot to the locker room for gatorade and adjustments.
As fans, we don't need a resume or credibility. We buy the right to criticize when we support our teams.
