Boom

And the politicians of the city of Atlanta might be even more moronic than the ones in Washington (if that's even possible) so what does that say about the people who voted for them?
Missing the point. Nobody is signing off on their own political execution. That part is universal.

RE: Georgia State's plan for Turner Field challenged
The Georgia State plan has the power to change the entire Turner Field area because it doesn't only include a stadium.... you know, just like we are changing the part of downtown we're situated in. Our plan calls for a mixed use development of student housing, single family homes, and retail, and a grocery store. Folks seem to always conveniently forget that part when they bring up GSU and Turner Field on this board. I think certain people on here are hoping we don't get the property.... but luckily these decisions aren't made by people who post to message boards. Get your popcorn, it's going to be an interesting year in regards to GSU & Turner Field.

Georgia State's plan for Turner Field challenged
I would hope that the land goes to Georgia State. The prospect of growing the university by using that land should outweigh casinos, but hey this is 2015 America we are talking about.

Yah, my vote is with Georgia State, but if the Casino wins out there's always the prospect of renovating Herndon Stadium.

I'm pretty sure God could state his intentions to make Turner Field into new heaven and the local residents around there would complain.

Georgia dome is not the place for GSU to get its program going. A nice sports facility with an intimate 20k stadium is perfect for GSU to prove they are serious about football at the school. I really wish you and south Alabama the best in getting your own stadia.

Thanks from a Jags fan/booster and we are all cautiously optimistic that we will be in a new stadium by 2017-18. Hopefully GState will get the Turner Field property, but afraid they'll get it and go coosa on us. Love the rivalry.

It looks like GSU has some competition for the Turner Field site. The Mayor and Governor seem to prefer the GSU plan but these casino companies are sure to pure a lot of money into the Atlanta economy.

Big $$$$ entering the picture.

Can the Governor and Mayor turn away hundreds of millions of revenue dollars and thousands of jobs to keep a football stadium that only a few thousand people 6 times a year attend?

Yes. The Governor's press secretary already went on the record on saying that yes casino gambling is gaining traction in Georgia, but has strong doubts anything will happen before the next inauguration day.

I take that to mean no gambling on Deal's watch. He just got reelected and that place can't sit idle for 2 years after the Braves leave.

Deal gives gambling supporters an opening

I guess I have to eat my words. It still means the soonest anything could be decided on gambling is after the Braves have finished their last season at the Ted. And you would still have to get a constitutional amendment that requires a two-thirds vote in both legislative chambers and the majority of Georgia voters on the ballot.

I had a feeling HOPE would be brought into this discussion. It could provide the covering fire politicians need to save face when voting in Casinos.

Yes folks in the ATL have a great track record of electing ethical politicians. The entire metro area for that matter. Obviously the GSU stadium vs a casino would be better but unless you are new to politics you are naive to think the vote can't be bought. The ATL airport has been the ATL's mayor's personal ATM for decades. What ever happened with all that empowerment zone funding?07-coffee3

I ageree. If this turns south and the casinos win then I may become a Eagles fan. It would be just that devastating. #notseriousbutkinda

Ironically the folks out in the country often referred to by Ga State fans as "dumb rednecks" might be the reason you get a new stadium as these unwashed non metro folk elect people that will be far less inclined to approve gambling.

Imagine the pay off for the contract to put slot machines in the ATL airport....ole Kasim is probably already looking at some beachfront property. #NotseriousWaitYesIam

Honestly I think I called this in the original thread when this came about. As much as I dislike GaState and all 90% of its 10 fans that post here, it would sicken me to see this happen.

The longer that opportunity sits there without movement, the more nervous I'd get if I was GState. I know it won't happen overnight, but more entities will throw their hats in the ring.

Ya think, huh? Most of the negativity comes from fans/posters from that school in southeast of you.
