I disagree on the "shady" part. Western DeKalb along the MARTA line and Decatur in particular have become the hottest destination area in metro Atlanta. From a speculators perspective, the Turner Field area is the next stop on the redevelopment train. It's all coming together at just the right time.

I could've sworn people were saying State was a shoo-in to get this land because nobody really wants it.

If that's true, then someone needs to inform the Braves what they are missing out on by moving into the outer city.

IMO the Braves switching locations has little to do with actual location and everything to do with increasing their revenue stream. A new stadium allows them all the additional perks that comes with stadium ownership. They also hope to tap in to a wealthier, older demographic that can pay for all the luxury and club seating that they are adding.
Will this make Braves executives richer? Yes. Will it be successful? For a decade or so. Will the Braves move back in to the city in our lifetime? Yes. Yes they will.
The Turner Field area can be revitalized just like the 4th Ward, East Lake, Edgewood/Candler Park, Inman Park, Grant Park, East Atlanta, etc. It just takes the right developers and we have them. If the Atlanta Braves would have gotten the Ted refurbished and upgraded for free and a larger piece of the money pie they wouldn't be leaving.

"our lifetime" is a vague timeframe, but I'll predict that the Braves will be in the Cumberland/Galleria location for at least 50 years.

I don't know if they will come back. People said the same thing about the Yankees when they left Manhattan 100 years ago for the "boonies" in the Bronx.

Plus I think with them there the metro transit and Cobb County sentence goes from "if" to "when"

I think there will definitely be a MARTA station at/near the Braves stadium within the next 10 years. But remember, Cumberland/Galleria is still inside the Perimeter ("ITP" as we locals say). People talk as if the Braves are moving to Marietta or East Cobb, but that's just not the case.

Still are. And no nobody wants it. The reality is that the state entity component and city/county owned land component is why this has so many hurdles. There are cranes up all over the city. If a private party had a plan for the area that involved retail and residential and there was no stadium there now there would already be earth moving. GSU and Carter are bending over backwards to show the neighborhoods that they can be good partners etc. But the mayor and governor want this. Technically they could just shove this down people's throats and say deal with it. This is the plan for the 77 acres. There is nothing legally to stop them. But its not how Carter and GSU do things. This is not our first land acquisition rodeo. We have been doing this for 60 years downtown and I think the prevailing feeling is that we have been excellent stewards and should continue to be.

I seriously doubt that area will be used for anything but what State's plans are for it

The more I hear about how this came out in a press conference it becomes more apparent that its a scare tactic.

It will be interesting to see how bad the casinos want it. If they do, I'm sure you will start to see some big numbers thrown around that will put pressure on the politicians.

Casinos would have no positive impact on the surrounding areas. In fact would be the opposite no matter the money.

Apparently the Atlanta Hawks are also interested in the Turner Field area. Anyone heard anything about that?

I heard they want a new stadium, which I think is a joke. Phillips Arena is perfectly fine for them. I'm tired of seeing all these sports teams hijack my city. You have 2 good seasons and all of a sudden you think you're owed something.

State's is the best plan from a redevelopment and revitalization of that area perspective. Casinos would be a nightmare, wrapped in crime, buttered with prostitution (which the Atlanta area has a serious problem with), and finally dumped in a hot greasy tub of wasteful spending. The hawks would use a tiny portion of the area and then keep all that parking which is a hideous eyesore on the area and they'd get rid of one of the last surviving Olympic stadiums in America.

State all the way with this one

I really want this to happen for Georgia state. I really can't stand using municipal venues for college sports. Nothing can replace your own field. Georgia dome is not the place for GSU to get its program going. A nice sports facility with an intimate 20k stadium is perfect for GSU to prove they are serious about football at the school. I really wish you and south Alabama the best in getting your own stadia.

The Falcons, Braves and Hawks all want to own their stadium and/or surrounding area instead of leasing it. They want more control and more money. I don't blame the Hawks for wanting their own arena. After seeing the city(s) hand out money to help pay for the other two teams new homes I'd ask for a hand out too... Now as a taxpayer I hope we've seen the last of this.

It's owned by Atlanta Fulton County Recreation Authority and operated by the Hawks' new ownership.

And the politicians of the city of Atlanta might be even more moronic than the ones in Washington (if that's even possible) so what does that say about the people who voted for them?
