William & Mary releases annual campus crime stats
Several William and Mary students on their way to class Friday morning said they generally feel safe on the historic campus in Williamsburg.

"It's nice here," a junior studying psychology said Friday. "I think most of (William and Mary students) feel that way."

This fall, The College of William and Mary released its annual crime statistics for its Williamsburg and other campuses that show the students are right for the most part.

Too bad they don't publish records on traffic tickets. That number might be eye-opening.

That is a staggering number of tickets. Talk about treating students like a cash machine...

I know more than a few people who are still bitter about the overzealous issuing of parking tickets. For some it's to the point that they don't want to give the school money as they feel they gave enough through those parking tickets.

Don't think it is so bad. According to the article, 36% of the citations were warnings without fines. Most fines are only $10 for first offense (then $30 and $50 for 2nd and 3rd offenses) so the fines are not bad especially considering all these cars should have parking decals somewhere on campus already.

Must be based on annual income. Us commoners only have to pay 10 bucks.

My buddy got a $200 parking ticket as an undergrad. He talked his way out of it and is now at Marshall-Wythe

This is a rationalization...I remember getting parking tickets when I was at W&M when I was parked legally, and the appellate board refusing to reverse the ticket.

Nobody got parking tickets in my day - nobody had a car and nobody missed having a car. Good thing there were no tickets; I used to park "my" school bus behind Bryan Hall during the day time between morning runs and afternoon runs and the bus took up 8 parking spots! so I would have never been able to afford to pay that many parking tickets.

I am obviously not supporting that and the people who got tickets in the story did not claim that so I was not going to assume that in almost all circumstances.

That is crap what happened to you though. Out of curiosity, what was the Appellate Board's reasoning?

RE: William & Mary releases annual campus crime stats
I used to ignore tickets. At one point my fraternity brothers and I had all 4 of the parking boots on our cars. The rest of the guys gave us rides. Eventually we waited out the boots.

Then in my last semester I received a notice i wouldn't receive my diploma if I didn't pay up. I grabbed my checkbook and went to the campus police office to be informed that I had 2 outstanding tickets for a total of $5. I made sure to get a receipt saying "paid in full". I'm pretty sure I came out way ahead on that one.
