RE: OT: Star Wars Thread [Warning: Spoilers]
I was playing to some of ya'lls pre-conceived notions. I will actually be very surprised if it's Luke's kid.

Seriously though, if Ren is indeed an offspring of a Skywalker I believe its far more likely to be that of Leia and Han. Power of a jedi and dark moral character of an illegal smuggler (or scoundrel if you will).

Or perhaps there is another explanation such as the Emperor having himself cloned before getting tossed by Vader?

Will know soon. This feels like waiting for the opening weekend of college football season only better....

Growing up I was cautiously optimistic that we would ever get the second trilogy (i.e. Episodes I-III). Never did I imagine that I would ever see this expand beyond that. Having cake and eating it too.

I feel like both are offspring of Han and Lea. One is good and one is evil. I am guessing Kylo kills Solo (his dad).

Non-Spoiler info:

Early non-spoiler reviews seem to say the movie lives up to its hype as being very good. Only negative is about a cgi character that seems to contrast with rest of the film. (This film's Jar-Jar?) Oh well, guess Disney couldn't help themselves.

Too bad they couldn't use cgi to replace Jake Lloyd (young Anakin) with an older version in the Phantom Menace, and alter the dialog, and heck, just alter the whole movie. Same with the awkward Anakin/Hayden Christiansen dialog and acting in Clones.

RE: OT: Star Wars Thread [Warning: Spoilers]

Atlanta musician goes viral playing all 31 parts of 'Star Wars' theme on guitar
4:16 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 17, 2015 | Filed in: Movies

One thing you need to know about Cooper Carter is that he loves "Star Wars." Another thing you need to know is that he's a professional guitarist — been playing since he was 5, performed with the Indigo Girls — who also works in video production.

So when he said that it was not really a chore at all to spend hundreds and hundreds of hours rearranging and recording composer John Williams' 31-part orchestral "Star Wars" theme for guitar, he meant it.

"This was a perfect project," Carter told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution of his theme-redux, released Dec. 7, which has racked up more than 500,000 views on YouTube and been covered by Entertainment Weekly, Guitar World ("which I've been subscribing to since I was 6") and others.

In the video, Cooper, a Druid Hills native and Westminster grad, plays his guitars in a 16-split screen. The different guitars sub as the different instruments: flutes, clarinets, french horns and more (all while Cooper wears various "Star Wars" T-shirts).

His "guitar orchestra" has also earned plaudits from musicians, including Queen's Brian May, who posted about it on Facebook, and John Petrucci, his personal hero. The web traffic crashed Cooper's personal website, too, and it's still down.

But Cooper knew what he was getting into by recording and releasing the video how and when he did — mostly. He's an "enormous" fan of the iconic sci-fi franchise, and he knew the run-up to the release of "The Force Awakens" would be a good time to drop the video.

He hoped it would be well seen. But all the press attention, plus reports that his version of the theme is being played on ESPN Radio and other stations, exceeded expectations, he said.

"It's been really fun watching it spread across the world," Cooper said.

The video was weeks and weeks — and guitars and guitars — in the making, starting around early November and snowballing from there, after Cooper started exploring the theme's melody on guitar.

Asked to estimate how many hours he spent on it, rearranging and playing and recording and editing and mixing, Cooper couldn't settle on a number. Two hundred hours? Three hundred? Four?

"Honestly, it was so much fun," he said.

(The guitars were mostly his, but the "Star Wars" shirts he had to buy.)

Some of the trickiest parts of the process were in playing the already-tricky violin and flute parts with a guitar, Cooper said. But "Star Wars" is the film that made him want to be an artist when he was growing up, was "the most important thing" to him as a kid.

So the reward of pulling off the video, of learning and arranging all the theme's composite parts, was well worth the work.

And, yes, he'll be at the first showing of "The Force Awakens" in Atlanta tonight, just in time to hear Williams' melodies again — from a different set of instruments.

"I'll never be able to hear them the same way again," Cooper said, "because I hear all these little parts that I had to figure out, and it's been such a joy to crawl into John Williams' mind in a way and listen to everything he was doing with it."

RE: OT: Star Wars Thread [Warning: Spoilers]
I so wanted to like this movie. My nephews' half-sister's daughter, Cailey Fleming, plays the young Rey. But this movie was not that good. It borrowed plot points from episodes 4, 5, and 6 and crammed them into one movie set roughly 30 years later. Mark me down as hugely disappointed.

• Rey lives on a desert planet and doesn't know who her parents are, she encounters a droid key to the resistance (same as Luke and the rebellion)
• Kylo faces his father, Han Solo, on a catwalk and kills him (Luke faces his father,Vader, on a catwalk and gets his hand sliced off)
• Han Solo, Chewie, and Finn infiltrate a facility and destroy it to lower the force field (Han Solo and team infiltrate a facility on Endor and lower the force field)

Not much effort for originality here.

That is your right. If you are happy with unoriginal, uninspired movies then carry on.

At least episodes 1, 2, and 3 had more originality (despite being prequels) than episode 7. The embedded video here is more original than the movie.

My son enjoyed it...few reasons why he can stay up past 930 on a school night...stars wars debut is one of them.

Me on the other hand was not impressed. I'm not a fan of getting the old crew back together.

I didn't object to getting the old crew back together. I just wanted an original story, not a rehash.

(12-06-2015 04:04 PM)ThunderDent Wrote:  My theory from what I think will happen based on old movies/new leaks:

*Mark Hamill wanted Luke to join the Dark Side in ROTJ. Lucas said no.
*Luke has a family history of having trouble letting the Dark Side cloud judgment.
*In ROTJ, Luke begins wearing all black and black glove for mechanical hand
*Luke uses "Force Choke" on Gamorian Guard in Jabba's Palace. (a Sith quality)

What we know for TFA:
*Kylo Ren in the leader in the "Knights of Ren"
*He is working with the New Order Stormtroopers
*Finn & Rey seem to know Han Solo somehow, and know the stories they heard growing up

What I think:
*In the days since ROTJ, Luke has taken Anakin's body with him for burial.
*He lives a life away from Han/Leia, etc.
*Kylo Ren will be Luke's son, a Skywalker.
*Rey is Han/Leia's Daughter, which they have had her tucked away growing up away from all the Empire/Rebellion.
*Finn is either just some stormtrooper, or, he could be son of Lando Calrissian.
*Luke convenes with Anakin/Yoda/Obi-Wan for years in his solidarity.
*He learns more about his father and wants to master more of the Force, leading him to want to try to grow his powers.
*Luke forms the "Knights of Ren" to act as the new order of Jedi Knights. He teaches his son Kylo the ways of the force and how to communicate with the dead.
*Luke, not being a complete Jedi Master, can't control his son's cloud of Judgment from the Dark Side. --OR-- they think that what they are doing with the Knights of Ren is what is best for the Galaxy, much like when the Jedi Order thought they knew best when overthrowing the Senate/Palpatine with Force. All this is clouded in the Dark Side. Kylo falls into the path of the Sith with his Grandfather's teachings.

I think the movie will revolve around Rey getting involved with her Mother and Father in search of her Uncle Luke and Cousin Kylo somewhere in the Galaxy to try to restore peace, and future movies will be about inner turmoil and bringing balance to The Force. (Which Luke thinks he is doing now asthe right thing).

My Spolier thought: Han Solo dies in TFA.
Next movie will have more Luke in it.

Just my thoughts.

You got the parents wrong. Kylo is Han's and Leia's son. Rey is Luke's daughter.

I enjoyed it immensely, but I agree that an original story would have been better. Now to wait on the next one.....

RE: OT: Star Wars Thread [Warning: Spoilers]
I get the criticism of the movie being redundant. But considering how the prequels completely screwed up the series with their cartoon characters and CGI overkill, TFA is effectively a giant reset button back to the original magic of Episodes IV-VI.

Every time TFA "recycled" catch phrases or scenarios from the original trilogy, the audience reacted with joy and excitement. It was like opening up a box from the attic to discover all of the pictures, toys and memorabilia from your youth. TFA was one giant conduit to happy memories from 30 years ago.

The REAL challenge in Episode VIII will be taking all of this renewed excitement and turning it towards the NEW storyline. Obviously, the Yoda-Luke dynamic will be replayed with the new Luke-Rey dynamic. But what ELSE developments in the next installment will be the critical aspect for the next two movies.

While I agree that episodes 1-3 lacked the heart and emotion of 4-6 they at least were original. TFA is nothing more than a rehash, it could be considered a reboot. BTW, I'm not a big fan of reboots, especially ones that occur within 20 years of the original.

TPM was somewhat slow and boring as it set up the prequel universe but it was infinitely more enjoyable (outside of Jar Jar Binks) because it had an original story.
Give me TPM, AOTC, and ROTS over TFA any day.

There is no reason to recycle those catchphrases or scenarios to get us in the mood for upcomng movies. That could've been better done by simply re-releasing the originals leading up to the new movie.

While the movie was ok, better than many, it could've been so much better.

RE: OT: Star Wars Thread [Warning: Spoilers]
I think Disney really wanted to get everyone back on board after an extremely disappointing prequel trilogy. I don't think there's any doubt that they accomplished that with this one. The story wasn't incredibly deep, but I expect VIII to do much more in that regard. There was alot of fan service, but hell, it's Star Wars from Disney and I expected that.

There will always, always be a percentage of the Star Wars fanbase that won't be happy. I guarantee you that percentage is much less for this one than it was for the trash we got in I and II.

You can say it 'rehashed' characters and storylines by comparing bits and pieces of it to the original trilogy, but the truth is that Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron were all very original characters for the series. The movie did not spend a ton of time on Luke and Leia, so it's not like TFA relied on their presence to work. Again, I really think they did a good job setting up the playing field going forward and earning the trust of Star Wars fans after what we got in I-III.

RE: OT: Star Wars Thread [Warning: Spoilers]
But my point is that they could've introduced these new characters with more original action and not an almost blow-by-blow recount of the action from the first three movies.

And people ***** and moan of James Cameron and Avatar. While Avatar follows cliched tropes it housed them in an original and interesting story. Imagination in the movie industry is a dying quality. The plethora of reboots is a testament to that fact.

There is a vast library of great science fiction from the last century that has yet to be made into a film. Why not do that than reboot an already successful film franchise? Because they have no balls and are unwilling to take the risks.

RE: OT: Star Wars Thread [Warning: Spoilers]
I, for one, freaking loved it.

I'm sure a lot of that was that I sequestered myself completely. I never even watched a trailer.

Going in, all I knew was that there was a bad guy named Kylo Ren, who I honestly didn't think was human. I knew that there was a black stormtrooper. I knew that there was a droid that looked like a soccer ball wearing a yarmulke. That's about it.

If I'd watched all of the trailers and dissected them and formulated my own theories before I walked into the theatre, I probably would have hated it. I didn't, and I loved it. The only thing that really bugged me was... well... come on, bad guys. How many times are you going to try this Death Star thing before you realize that it's a bad idea? Well, that and the nomenclature of "The Resistance." The Rebels won. They're the damned Republic.

As for it being a rehash, of course there are going to be obvious similarities... but I feel like this is setting up an inverse storyline. I-III were all about good becoming evil. VII introduced Kylo Ren's inner conflict and pull to the Light... and I feel that ultimately, over the course of VIII and IX, we'll see Kylo Ren renouncing his Darkness. Dude killed his dad. That's something that only a being of pure evil can do and walk away from. A pull to the Light indicates a conscience, one that will eat him alive once he realizes what he's done.

I think he's in for a rude awakening when he finally learns to communicate with Vader and sees what we all saw at the end of VI.

The Romulans of course. The Klingons are too emotional. They let their anger and hatred cloud their judgment. 05-stirthepot
