Jeremiah Martin is head and shoulders above Pookie just 3 games in. Who, in their right mind, would rather have Pookie and Johnson over Tarrant and Martin. Martin is our point guard of the future. Quick, smart, fearless, can drive, and, unlike Pookie, he can dribble.

Not at all.

Again, I'm not saying it makes up for failures in other areas or overall recruiting issues....but consider that in the late period summer he added both Tarrant and Martin. Imagine how bad we'd be without those 2.

one roster that Paz pieced together...had only 2 big men...Spoon and William Coleman...and lost to Arizona in the NCAA tourney by two points. The same Arizona team went on to smash Duke.

plus to state the obvious...Martin is a Memphis kid. I love it when we have a Memphis pg running the show...

Some people hate Pastner so much they'll throw any Tigers kid that supports him straight under the bus.

Uh, he's averaging 3 ppg and 2 apg.

Last night, vs the worst team in D1 he made one basket and had 1 assist in 15 minutes of play.

He might have the "tools" but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

He made 2 3's, only took 3 shots for 6 points and had 2 assists.

I like him. He plays hard and has a defensive focus. Hopefully he will take after his coach in high school.

Thank you and why would you, Saluki, resort to making up stats to put down a kid who is playing great and is helping make Memphis a relevant basketball team this year? And I saw Pookie all year last year, the kid couldn't dribble up court and was terrible at trying to run the offense and worse on defense.

Martin can do both those things and is playing really hard on defense.

Alvin Wright, Otis Jackson, Andre Turner, Elliot Perry, John Wilfong, Joe Jackson, Willie Kemp, Derrick Rose, Darius Washington, Antonio Burks, Bill Laurie, Chris Garner, Anfernee Hardaway….

Add Mr. Jeremiah Martin to this list.

It is a breath of fresh air to have an unheralded freshman PG look D1 ready in mid-November. He is everything Pookie and Cunningham were not last year. He plays within himself, is a good on-ball defender, and the team does not look out of sync because of him.

If Tarrant were to miss time, I don't think we'd lose too much with Martin on the floor. I'd be more concerned about who is filling Martin's backup minutes. I agree with Pastner that he will be a fan favorite for the next 4 years.

Whoever is responsible for getting him on campus and preparing him for this season, job well done (Stoudemire/Turner/Pastner/etc). Pastner did a great job of scrounging talent together for this past recruiting class with Martin and the 2 reclassifications. Hopefully, the reclassifications won't hurt the 2016 class. Charlie Moore appears to be a nice surprise, but I think we already have our PG for the next 3 years.

I agree, I think one of the main reasons we struggled last year was horrible point guard play. I mean pookie didn't belong out there, Cunningham was even more lost than Pookie which is saying something and we had to go with 300lb Kedren Johnson who I'm convinced I could easily out run. We basically had to throw Markel in for some mins there and whoever else we could find. I think we have significantly upgraded the point guard spot with Tarrant and Martin. Like you I hope they stay healthy though I don't want to see Kedren coming in this year. I mean even KJ can run a little point forward a couple possessions a game.

I really like this team a whole lot better than last years team. Thinking back now I'm not sure why we had such high expectations for last years team. They were just bad. I'm trying to think of one productive player off that team and I can't think of one and I watched every game. Who was good on last years team? I really can't remember. Other than Nichols? I guess Markel showed promise. He was maybe the lone bright spot. If u look at it King was Terrible for whatever reason still a head scratcher. Can't miss top 50 wings come here to die I guess. i.e. Adonis, Iverson, King, Kendrick, Wilson, not top fifty but was top 100. It's just puzzling what happens with these "stars" when they get here. I mean even Shaq top fifty kid McDonalds All American but just never can really seem to figure it out. He has the athleticism to be good but he lacks certain skills and understanding of the game. U can't teach big men instincts but u can teach him footwork, low post moves, how to pass out of the high post.(he turns the ball over way too much) he just seems to never get better it's the same thing every year with Shaq but nothing changes at some point we just have to realize he's just an average college player.

I'm not trying to hate here but the real question is if Shaq goes to a UK or Duke or Kansas is he a better player today? I'm not sure but I would lean towards yeah he would be a better player today. I have zero evidence that any player ever got better or developed under Pastner. I know here comes the DJ Stephens crowd but really Pastner didn't teach D.J to have a 40 whatever inch vertical or how to block shots if anything Pastner buried him on the bench for three years cause he thought he couldn't play then come to find out his senior year what do u know this guy can help us lol. So please don't say DJ cause it's not entirely true. Can anyone think of any player that left in higher regard than when they came in? It's an honest question. I can't think of any. In fact a lot of them got worse and their NBA stock plummeted, which is a big reason why Austin left. He's an afterthought on a mock draft after two years here. He came in a big name 5 star top ten can't miss kid now he can't even make the top sixty of a mock draft. U could say the same for numerous others. I dunno one guy who came in and actually improved his draft stock while here.

Not sure the reclassifications will hurt...other than from a raw when they started here analysis.

In other words, heading into NEXT season, a Dedric Lawsom will simply be even better than he would have been had he played in high School this year. Several years down the road there could be an effect, but plenty of time to address any of those issues.

I must have forgotten about Pookie's transfer... DAMN!

He was never Memphis good and I say this in a good way... I always though Nick King was getting pushed out by Pastner until a guy who knew King told me the whole real story... King just got lazy in college, never tried to develop his game in spite of people telling him so... He thought he was gonna push people around like he did in high school because he was bigger... College is a whole different game.

The deal is he is always piecing together a roster...

Since there is so much volatility he is always forced to PIECE together a roster instead of smoothly transitioning from backups to starters.

Martin a great example of how you bring a kid in let him learn in a backup role and take over the following year. Same thing with KJ Lawson...

Martin needs to work on his shot. Reminds me of Donneal Mack. Lefties all hold it to the side and shoot with sidespin. They never get the roll. Gotta swish it to make it. He straightens that out and he's got a chance

Who said they would rather have pookie and Kedren over Martin and Tarrant? That's crazy it's not even close who's better. Pookie was prob the worst starting point guard we have had in twenty years. Kedren is out of shape, slower than me and cares nothing about basketball. I don't really see where there is even a debate about it. Really it's been awhile since we had 4 contributors right away in Tarrant, Dedric, KJ and Jeremiah u could even throw Marshall in there too. To go along with much improved Markel Crawford and Trashon Burrell. I have not been impressed with Shaq or Avery but I really don't expect much out of them they are what they are at this point. I wouldn't start Shaq. He doesn't really help us half the time he's in his own world almost like he's out there but u would never know it. Last have against the worst team in basketball he took no shots in the first half and had a couple rebounds. Woodson can't guard anyone and is a streaky shooter really his only strength is if he's knocking down shots that's all he can do.
