Gee thanks. Pretty soon DavidSt will have some asinine thread about that very conference being formed.
Too few teams and no West Texas A&M
Good catch!

If SMU got the death Penalty and dropped athletics, who replaces them in the AAC

North Texas wouldn't sniff the AAC. They are a poor FCS/D-2 team cloaked as an FBS team. Rice, with its academics, would be a good fit as they aren't generally too shabby in football.
The American already has the Houston market, unless if I missed the Big 12's expansion announcement.

So, who would replace them in the AAC and why?
The Soviet Union because.....well.....because they are the damn Soviet Union.
A whole country can't join the NCAA. It would be the Soviet Army Academy football team.

Oh, I see what you did there. Very well played, sir.

They already have a team in the Houston market ... but in terms of exposure or viewership, they don't "have" the Houston market, they only have a slice of it. It's a dang big market, so maybe getting a slightly bigger slice of it would be worth something.

Adding Rice still wouldn't give the AAC the Houston market.

Rice has had respectable attendance of 18296 (FCS Wagner), 20124 (Western Kentucky), 24409 (Army), and 18010 (Louisiana Tech on a Friday night). It has been accomplished with donors who purchase and donate large blocks of tickets to youth programs, and promotions such as veterans free (Army), and free tickets for kids (Louisiana Tech).
Even with the disappointing play of the team this year (2015 has been a throwback to the SWC days where the fans left the stadium after the Marching Owl Band performance at halftime because the Western Kentucky and Louisiana Tech games were already out of reach), the Homecoming game against Southern Mississippi should have ok attendance. The Thanksgiving weekend attendance for the final home game against Charlotte, though, might be scary.
If Rice has gate problems, peg it to administrative failure. You are Ivy-like and used to play with other esteemed schools. Now, your plate is full of directional and system schools. Yes, loyal fans show up regardless, but throw them a bone and let them run with other academic studs. And not in the non-conference.
Highest ceiling of the G5...I wish they'd realize it.

Rice would be a great add to the AAC, given that Navy, Tulane and SMU are already part of the conference. Throw in Army and Air Force, and you have the makings of a conference that is a cross between the Ivy League and the ACC. Houston may be making its way to the Big 12 anyway.

I think a Frankenstein/best of conference is still possible between AAC/MWC/CUSA and certain independents, but it's very slim. The problems lie with flagships who aren't athletically great or big, but look good academically, to city schools without the academic prestige but competitive programs. I don't see how Memphis, UNLV, and Temple (most years) make for consistently good football, even though you have a pretty sick and sweet basketball conference there. But, you can't with UConn, CSU, USU, and others of their kind, either.
