BIG bodied WR at 6'5" 220 or so, and he was supposedly a big impact guy in their spring practices.

OSU is not so superior to us that a typical walk-on for them would be scholarship-worthy for us... absolutely not. Someone would have to be insane (or an incredibly wealthy OSU superfan) to pay tens of thousands of dollars to be an OSU walk-on if UC were offering them a full scholarship.

However...

Garyn Prater is not a typical OSU walk-on. He has developed very nicely, and some people have been saying on 247 that if he stayed at OSU, he may have been awarded a scholarship.

Sounds good to me. If he doesn't work at WR, maybe another K (Kelce - not kicker) position. It'd be hilarious to see a spread with 4 guys out there 6'3"-6'6" and 130lbs to 150lbs. Call it the giant package. :)

I read somewhere the other day that Garyn Prater would have to sit a year out after transferring which seemed wrong given he was a walk on. Anyone know his eligibility?

Walk on or scholarship doesn't change transfer rules.

Are you sure about that? I could have sworn that you could transfer with no penalty if you are going from walk-on to scholarship. There may be a snag if he is offered a scholarship by OSU. I can't imagine that the NCAA is that stupid to penalize a kid getting a 30K a year scholarship.

From my understanding the only difference is that if you transfer while under scholarship a school can block you for 1 year from receiving financial aid. If you are enrolled in an institution and transfer out by default you have to sit out for a year unless a waiver is given by the NCAA.

I thought the same, but i have to try and dig up where i read that last week. Evidently if you were a member of the team is what matters. I'm guessing he didn't play enough so as to burn a year of eligibility, but i do not know all the facts.

Walk-ons can now transfer without sitting out.
A rule like this could have let Baker Mayfield play immediately at Oklahoma in 2014, after he transferred from Texas Tech and said the Red Raiders hadn’t offered him a scholarship.
It’s not clear how many walk-ons have transfer opportunities in front of them at any given time, but this, too, seems like the right move. Why should a player who’s not on scholarship be required to sit out if they get an offer from a team that would pay for their school?

Good for him. No one should have to sit out when they're on their own dime. The ncaa got something right for a change. Must have been some money in it for them.

NOW it's def starting to look like 2018. What's even better is typically a major QB commit can excite other skill players to join along in the class. This could be our ticket to finally bagging some highly rated WRs (apologies to Meechi)
