ESPN Asks to Delay Start of ACC Channel
The launch of an ACC network run in partnership with ESPN, which has been expected for 2017, will likely take longer than expected.

The cable giant has asked for the delay, according to Georgia Tech president G.P. “Bud” Peterson, who made the statement at last week’s Georgia Tech Athletic Association quarterly board meeting. Conversations between the league and network are ongoing. The conference and network have discussed partnering on a dedicated ACC channel at least five years.

“(ESPN) had come back and said that in some of the other instances where (conference) networks have started, they lost considerable amounts of money in the first couple of years,” Peterson said. “What they’d like to do is delay the start for a couple years and do the necessary preparation.”

RE: ESPN Asks to Delay Start of ACC Channel
"...the request to delay from 2017 is a result of ESPN’s desire to properly time the launch of an ACC channel, wanting to ensure broad distribution with cable operators."

Sounds like they're wanting to duplicate the way they rolled out the SEC Network.

So, that's obviously not good.

But definitely it was a real possibility after the rights bubble started to pop.

A LOT of people have questioned the viability AND start time of an "ACCN". This certainly doesn't help the "pro-ACC" crowd's position.

On the bright side, the article confirmed that ESPN will pay member teams more as compensation for delay in network.
$2 million more per team puts us right in the mix with the Big12 and Pac12.

Does ESPN have something renewing in a couple years that they can bundle with the new AccN?

This is great news because it shows that ESPN does want to start an ACC Network.... It is coming!!!

The question is will the ACC wait for ESPn or start secret plans with Fox Sports or NBC??? I am guessing the ACC is waiting for the ESPN all the way....

It's nice to have others confirm what has been said privately for years, no network by 2017, $2 more dollars. I remember being called a liar about that.

Perhaps the real devil in the details is how much it would take to payoff Raycom and Fox rather than just allowing time to liquidate that obligation. I'm also not sure how happy people are with the SEC network. My cable carrier has it but to be honest it's a bunch of crap. How long can Paul Finebaum rant and how badly do you want to see the dregs of the conference play football.

If I were an SEC fan and were asked to pay for it, I would not.

Would've been nice if they used an actual quote by Peterson for that.

As for the Big 12 and Pac 12, they aren't the ACC's regional competitors.

RE: ESPN Asks to Delay Start of ACC Channel
An ACC network's strength is in the basketball and the extremely large footprint the effectively runs from Chicago to Boston to Miami.

In addition to turmoil in the cable tv world, ACC basketball has four pending question marks:

How bad will UNC be hit by sanctions?
How much longer will K coach?
Who will replace Pitino?
How will Syracuse fare without Boehiem

Even though football rings the cash register, ACC basketball is the network draw outside of Florida and Georgia.

Not good news at all, very disappointing. However, there is some silver lining:

1. ESPN essentially confirmed that there will be a channel launched and that they are making the necessary preparations.

2. We'll get additional payments in the mean time.

2. The article does a poor job here. It says payments "could" be made but doesn't say how much they'd be or when they'd start. If 2017 truly was some soft start date, than that payment money likely wouldn't start until then, if at all

RE: ESPN Asks to Delay Start of ACC Channel
The way I read this is ESPN wants to sell the ACC Network bundled with its own renewal rights for ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, and the SEC Network.

But the SEC Network launch last year was when ESPN renewed and sold the SEC Network bundled with their own channels. So I gotta ask ... just how long is that deal? Which expires first ... the ACC GOR in 2022(?) or the ESPN bundle? My guess is the former.

That makes at minimum 8 years of the SEC and B1G dropping 7 or even 8 figures more PER SCHOOL into the piggy bank. That's very bad for the stability of this conference as well as its ability to compete in the sports that matter.

The Mouse Fuhrer's price cutting measures at ESPN have scared them off of any investment without immediate ROI. They wildly overpaid for the NBA. They are probably overpaying for the NFL. And they are wildly overpaying their on-air "talent" and they have a wildly huge surplus of it since they insisted upon putting everybody they could find under contract to try to starve FS1 of talent when they launched.

As far as I'm concerned, the ACC Network is dead until further notice. But GTS, you're saying, they both want to do a network? And I'm saying you're looking at about a decade before that happens. A decade. Turn the clock back a decade and Miami/VT/BC are playing their first full ACC season. The WAC is still around. Alabama is in the toilet. The SEC East is dominant. The ACC just had a year in which they were the best conference in the Sagarin. Etc. College sports is moving fast. A decade is a LONG time. The SEC and B1G will grow tremendously more advantaged in the next few years. That's bad news for the Big 12 and now without a network bad news for the ACC.

It is difficult to imagine the Big 12 and ACC looking like they do today the exact same by the time the ESPN renewal window comes back up. If the ACC does get split up, partially liquidated, and partially merged among the AAC/B1G/SEC ... you can thank Swofford's chronic ineptitude at media rights negotiation for being the down fall. He set the dominoes of realignment into motion only to have other people hand him his *** at media rights negotiations.

I’ll say this. Several admins at ACC schools are worried that the Power 5 is really a Power 4 and they’re on the outside. This is a big deal

What were the most recent conference revenue payouts? With the $2 million bump, wouldn't the ACC be ahead of the Pac-12?

Again, it’s not the football product. The SEC $$ is getting bigger every year. The Big Ten is about to get paid. The ACC is falling behind.

It’s not about the playoff. It’s about revenue. The ACC is No. 5

The ACC directly competes with the Big Ten and SEC, not the Pac 12.

The "bump"? If it exists, it likely wouldn't start until 2017, which is when the ACCN was supposedly going to launch.

Is the ACC going to receive LESS CFP/NY6 money this year compared to last year? Yes. That is a fact.

Are all of the other conferences going to earn MORE CFP/NY6 money this year compared to last year? Yes. That is a fact.

The ACC is behind the SEC and Big Ten in money and both of those conferences have successful networks that are only further widening the gap. Even with a "bump", it's likely the Big Ten and SEC still pull away from the ACC in revenue.
