RE: 2017 Old Dominion Basketball Recruiting Den
I rarely come to this thread so it may have been discussed already but I looked up Matt Coleman's ESPN profile and we havent even offered him yet? UVA, VT, and VCU have. If he stays in-state and we didn't give him a look I'll be disappointed, even though our chances would still be small even if we did offer him.

ESPN is wrong. JJ had been recruiting him since the day he stepped on campus. Would bet the house we've offered.

According to this article, ODU and Virginia offered him in the eighth grade:

after last season I thought we might have a shot at this kid (better than 25% I'd say), but not anymore. I can't see a scenario where he'd want to come here now. I just hope VCU doesn't get him.

Pretty good chance kids going to Feces U get a lot higher than at other schools.

I think UVA gets him.

I like that he's smart enough to realize that the pending investigation is a real concern for UNC.

It seems like the folks working for Boo are getting more conscientious over where they send their best. Not going to see as many of their players going to schools with coaches on the hot seat or programs on the verge of NCAA infractions.

Intense love for the 757. That's the only hope. Otherwise, he's certain to land at a power school.

They sent Kenny Williams to UNC, and it's definitely not working out for him right now.

RE: 2017 Old Dominion Basketball Recruiting Den
I watched Coleman at that HoopsHall Classic a couple of weeks ago and he'd instantly upgrade us. As his current offer list doesn't look good for ODU, I'm mostly troubled by watching Mike Jones's ranked Dematha squad roll out with virtually no ODU recruiting offers. They had quite a few kids that could help us as well and for some reason it feels that he is disengaged with ODU similar to a world class baseball pitcher that some like to brag on around here.

I just can't understand why we cannot seem to keep these successful alumni in the camp of growing our program profile. In Jones's case, I'm really not sure it is him. I have to wonder how much our coaches reach out to him. I've been over and talked with him multiple times about my son's development. He's a really good dude. It's disappointing.

That said, I'm really glad to see him doing so well at his alma mater after replacing and irreplaceable legend.

Have said for years we should be recruiting the DC Catholic League. We took a shot at a kid from St. John's a year or so ago. Just about every school in that league has a kid. . . . Why don't you ask him why he hasn't sent anyone to ODU? If you're close enough to talk to him about your kid, seems like you could ask him anything.

Jones has been one of the biggest question marks I can think of for our program. A very, very good player, seemingly well liked, but no apparent connection to his alma Mater. Hope our admin and coaching staffs haven't poisoned the well.

Im not sure about the talent other than Allen, Fultz, and Harvey, but we obviously didn't have a shot at Harvey and Fultz.

He was given the distinguished alumni award in 2012 and called ODU his second home. Shrug.

That's a tough one. I certainly didn't want to put him on the defense when I was trying to get my son some looks at the Dematha camp. As I said, he's a real personable dude and you can tell how much the kids respect him from JV to Varsity as a mentor.

My observations on his connection to ODU is a complete aside. Mike seemed to pour out emotion as a Monarch and I would have thought he used to love ODU as much as I do. I don't know him as well as John Richardson so maybe that would be a better way to understand why we aren't in the mix for some of those kids.

And you're right, almost all conferences recruit the WCAC. I think UAB has a commitment from Dematha's deadly outside shooter right now.

Do you think a reason we are not as successful in recruiting some of these kids is the style of ball we play? Two coaches in a row, 14 years or so now, we have had teams that score in the 60's most nights. Looking around at all the teams I see on TV all the time, many of them have multiple players who can drive, shoot and dish. We seem to have the grind it out style of play, maybe not the most exciting style of play for many 17 year olds. Just a thought.

I think this is big problem attempting to recruit kids with our style of play. I do think our recruiting has improved under JJ.

RE: 2017 Old Dominion Basketball Recruiting Den
I think everyone still needs to give Jones time. He came here after a 5-25 season under Taylor. Couldn't really do too much for recruiting for his first season (other than Ebondo) yet managed to over achieve with that team. For year #2, his first real recruiting class - Freeman, Arledge, Biberaj, Douglas, Talley, the first Stith (sounds like Star Wars... just kidding), did I forget someone.... Whether I did or not, that was still a Band-Aid recruiting class, of which, Talley may end up being the best of the bunch but he was the only Freshman in that class... He did swing for the fences on a couple of other recruits and missed - but that's not totally unexpected since he hadn't completed a full season at ODU when he was recruiting at that point - he was selling from a 5-25 program with some signs of being better and playing time. Year 3 of recruiting - waiting in the wings - is basically an entire new team - the 2nd Stith, Porter, Colbert, Kah, Evans, Green, and Haynes. Again selling playing time and proving that he has/had and will win at ODU, regardless of style. I know we haven't been back to the NCAA but an NIT Final Four is pretty nice for a CUSA school. Meanwhile, this current team now looks similar to his first one for Jones at ODU especially when Biberaj got hurt. That's part a result of initial Band-Aid recruiting of JUCO and graduate Seniors in initially. But its also a result of injuries, transfers and more importantly, dismissed players. The transfers were original B. Taylor recruits but the dismissals, other than Mosley, are Jones' recruits. That is the only problem that I have with what he has done so far. We can't keep having the turnover of the roster. Its got to get stable and team chemistry needs to be A+ to reach where fans and people on this board want ODU to get to. Next year's team will need time for everyone to find their identity and roles. If it can stay together for the 2017-18 season, that's the year that should be the promised land and he appears to have recruited this Fall and last Spring (the 3 transfers) to get there IF and I mean IF, that bunch stay together with no dismissals and significant transfers... For example, can't lose Caver because Evans and Green showed up..., or because someone gets in trouble like Douglas and Mosley...
