A list of some candidates.

BYU

USF
ECU
Cincinnati

BYU is not a G5 team.

It's the best one that will be open this offseason, which in reality, is all that matters.

Kingsbury in particular went from making like $15k as a GA to now over $3 million at Tech in just a few years.

If you're a young and talented coach looking for your first gig and the Houston job comes open, you are falling over yourself at the opportunity of an interview.

You right about Briles Sumlin and others... But keep in mind they were here when our facilities were a joke... As you know our facility advantageous have tremendously improved... I'm confident that our future coaching staff will remain a while longer now but we'll also attract those 3-5 star recruits who didn't cared for UH before, IMHO, Kronke.

Would not be shocked to see Matt Campbell from Toledo hired at UCF or Doc from Marshall. I don't see any American Coach going to UCF from their current post.

The difference besides the stadium is that USF has a pro-team to compete with (as does Houston and Cincinnati), UCF doesn't.

Orlando City Soccer Club supporters continued to defy expectations in the Lions’ victory against NYCFC as 43,179 fans packed the Orlando Citrus Bowl to do their part in cheering OCSC to victory. Friday night’s crowd brought Orlando City’s average attendance up to 32,847, which is a Major League Soccer record for an expansion team. The turnout was also the second largest for an Orlando City game this season.

“We have the best fans in the league,” asserted Lions’ Head Coach Adrian Heath. “For us to have this support after one year in MLS is incredible.” The supporter presence tonight was at its best when the Lions needed it the most. In a must win match for Orlando City, the jam-packed Citrus Bowl was at full decibel for the length of the game.

I fail to see how that is at all relevant.

UCF has to be one of the best coaching gigs in the G5, and better than some coaching jobs outside of the G5 all factors considered. It's a job where a good coach can win conference titles while getting paid respectably, unlike many conference gigs, and with a team that has a history of winning. We have good recruiting grounds, a large population that is very college football friendly, and a large local fanbase to tap into. That FSU and UF are somewhat nearby doesn't really mean much, outside of top tier coaching gigs that will always be the case, and Orlando is relatively unique in that so many UCF grads choose to stay and live here post graduation. It's not a college town which hopes to draw fans to it, if we start winning, we have proven our fans do show up.

And, the cupboard is far from bare. We are losing because of poor coaching decisions, yes, but even Urban Meyer would have a hard time winning many games with a team so young and plagued by so many injuries.

It all boils down to what the personal preferences and goals of the coach in question, but you're right, our improvements definitely bump our probabilities of keeping coaches.

They aren't P5.

While you are correct by technicality- BYU is as much a P5 team as they are a G5 team, b/c they are not either. BYU is unable to qualify for the G5 access spot as they are not in a G5 conference and cannot be a conference champion.

Doug Meacham (currently at TCU) will be the next Offensive coach in the UH coaching tree to punch a big meal ticket. Major would be right there with him but for the student trainer incident. He will need another few seasons to get past that but he will be a HC someday as well.

If at some point Herman moves on from UH I hope we turn the keys over to Todd Orlando as I think we would keep the momentum rolling.

Orlando to Jax - 140 miles
Orlando to Tampa - 85 miles
Orlando to Miami - 235 miles

Thats a lot of NFL competition pretty damn close by. Not sure what that has to do with UCF being a good coaching job or not though.

Orlando Magic
Orlando City SC
Tampa Bay Lightning
Tampa Bay Rays
Miami Heat
Florida Panthers

Lots of pro sports competition though

good recruiting. No NFL team in a big market. More Florida and Florida St fans in Orlando, than UCF. Many residents of Orlando don't know college football exists. Mediocre facilities. Not a lot of money. Decent to good fan support. No history at all. (compared to the other college football teams not named USF and a few CUSA and SB teams. Good job: Yes. Best G5 job? No. Cheers!

I think it's clear he meant no direct NFL competition, as in no NFL team in the city. I don't see anyone mentioning the Carolina Panthers when discussing Clemson or ECU, so mentioning the Buc, Jags, or Dolphins means about as little. And the fact we have three teams nearby leads to overall apathy towards those teams in Orlando. As a city we don't latch onto any single team because of this, which I bet can't be said of the Carolinas.

As for the other sports, they are different sports, and therefore attract a different crowd. There are a crossover of people who are fans of all sports to be sure, but they don't play the same sport, which is sort of the entire point of the comment to begin with. But if you really think the Tampa Bay Lightning or Miami Heat are drawing away from UCF, I guess we might as well start including the number of movie theaters in the city too.

Except Orlando is college sports centric compared to a lot of other large cities. We're certainly no Birmingham, but we're also not a city whose NFL team takes all of the attention away from it or focuses on basketball. Football is Florida's sport, by a WIDE margin, and we were ignored by the NFL for a long time just like the rest of the Southeast, and we love college football just the same.
