Know anything more than the news reports?

I don't know anything other than what has been reported. They interviewed one of the students in the classroom on the local news and she said the student threw a stapler.

The teacher has since resigned.

Eh, had a 6th grade teacher that was infamous for throwing erasers. She's kind of a local legend. No one every thought to fire her though.

10th grade am. his teacher had a paddle with holes bored thru....we viewed it as a rite of passage...

I couldn't imagine having to teach any class if the age group was over 7/8 in an impoverished urban area.....that would be as close to hopeless that I can come up with....what an impossible job that pays dog food wages....

imagine a fed/state subsidized pay system that could compete with business to secure better minds to help mold.....implement strict rules that define both employee/student behavior that lets the employee/student know he screwed him/her self by running their yammer w/o permission......maintain/evolve standards that weed out the hands on from the minds on and place them accordingly as the game plays out.....it would happen on it's own....

at this point one would understand the hiring pool that exists and would generate business from that knowledge....

crazy talk isn't it? 03-wink

I'd freak out.

I could do it, but only with elementary school kids. I can handle temper tantrums, etc, but would lose it with some of the other special snowflakes.

You are a far more patient man than I then.

Well, I'm raising two elementary school kids now and haven't killed anyone yet. So, I've got that going for me, which is nice.

I have a four year old and she makes me lose it much faster than middle or high school kids.

Over the years, I have developed a very , very sharp sarcasm that usually puts most teens in their place in a heartbeat. None of that seems to work on my kids though.

Yes, but she is a four year old, still pretty much a baby so that is to be expected. Now, middle school and high school kids know better but choose to be aholes. It seems you have a technique that helps and that's part of the professionalism I was referring to above.

Speaking of professionalism, I think the only thing this woman did wrong was throw "f" bombs and the part where she mocked the kid. If she hadn't have done those things, she might have saved her job.

One thing I have learned is that whenever you confront a student, you have to give them an out. You have to let them save some sort of face in front of their peers.

No matter what happens, the teacher's job is to deescalate the situation. Mocking the student and dropping "f" bombs made things worse.

I went to Catholic school in the 1950s. I can't remember how many times I was hit with a ruler, slapped and had my shins kicked.

Those nuns would do almost anything to defend themselves.

Not to many success stories on federal government holding its own accountable to their standards- IRS, GSA, EPA, Dept. of State, etc.

And segregating the best and brightest from the masses certainly has not been a goal of recent administrations' social policies. Policies have been towards MORE integration of the thinkers and the knuckle-draggers, not less, unless of course, you are in a protected class or rip apart a clock to make it look like a bomb and bring it to school.

And to Fitbud's comments: I have great respect for those teachers that still can make an impact under current school conditions. Not enough money in the world for me to take a middle-school teaching job - that mix of puberty, body odor, and confused aggression is a cocktail that most would not like. When they get to high school, you'd hope the behavior gets better, but have heard of too many teachers attacked by students. If in that situation, I would not care less about the student "saving face".

Unless she had simply reached her breaking point and wasn't interested in saving her job. I mean, we always hear about kids who get bullied and show up and blow up or shoot up the school. Other than being older and having better command of their emotions (and often other responsibilities) I'm surprised more teachers aren't the ones cracking.

That is a fair point. I guess I just cannot imagine someone losing it to the point that they wouldn't care if they were going to lose their job or not.

I didn't say create another regulatory system....I said create a pay scale that grabs better minds...there is already enough of 'that' to create 'that'

para 2 helps prove the 'why' reform is necessary....and it has to start at the top of the food chain and not at the bottom...we need all forms of workers.....not robots w/o a clue (21st century james deans)

to para 3, I've always backed that sentiment.....I don't know how they do it.....I couldn't....that's why we need people like that at this point.....and they are continuing to dwindle into the abyss.....there is a reason the kids are how they are today....it goes way deeper into the rabbit hole....military style schooling is going to have to evolve as normal moving forward.....and I'm NOT TALKING ABOUT GOV'T CONTROLLED HIEL TYPE SHITE before anyone gets their panties in a wad.....

it makes zero sense to me how the public continues to spew all the crap policy that have controlled their lives w/o understanding cause/effect.....today's result is hardly an enigma....

be it red/blue....the philosophy o'day is abysmal across the board....I hate having to watch it develop....

We get some new hires that tell You right up front, They aren't doing that job They get assigned to. Many play on Their cell phone and let product go by to let repair fix it. Most of these young brats feel entitled to be given the same choices and rights and pay of workers that have been here for 40 years. It's A sad Obamanation generation coming up today. They cry like babies when They get their walking papers after several weeks of failures.

My generation is totally bifurcated. It is far more divergent than any generation I think has ever come down the pipe. The higher end is more productive and more capable than ever before while the bottom end are more useless than ever before. But, we are a product of what I think is the single most selfish generation that has ever existed, boomers. And, for the record, I use that term, boomer, as an exceedingly derogatory term.

The boomers?

I think that their selfishness is all consuming and they have done one thing that both reflects that and is all consuming.

They, unlike just about every generation before, has done everything in their power to prevent my generation from developing their own opinion, their own ideology, and their own take to deal with the world they will live in. Instead, they have done everything in their own selfish power to force their ideology on those who are coming next.

Boomers, the only generation in US history to leave the county in worse shape than when they were given it. That's the only fact we need to know.
