Kinda ironic
Here are a few things to think about...

Memphis knocked Ole Miss out of any chance to play in the FBS championship.

With the win over Ole Miss Memphis is a dark horse to make the FBS championship.

Tiger fans kid that Ole Miss has never made it to Atlanta. But it's in our interest to pull for them to not only make the SEC Championship Game but to win it.

If Ole Miss runs the table the rest of the regular season they beat out Alabama due to the head-to-head win over the Tide.

If Ole Miss wins the SEC Championship, the SEC will be locked out of this year's FBS championship.

Memphis could have a hand in locking the SEC out of the FBS championship.

If Bama wins out they likely make the playoff over us and Ole miss

How fun would that be for it to happen! I read some SEC mesage boards last night fearing this exact scenario

It may be hard to imagine but it's not impossible that the SEC will be left out. There would be an mighty uproar if bama got in without winning their conference championship let alone win their own division no matter how good they look but of course Ole Miss will have to win all of their games left for us to see this

I dont believe they can do it without winning the CCG. The committee has pretty much put that out there. I dont think its in stone (it is in stone for the access bowl) but the whole TCU / Baylor incident last year was because they didnt play each other for the on true conference champion.

Also, the value of the CCG's went way up last year. Thats because they became much more important. You degrade them by allowing someone who lost that game to still get in. They wont have near the importance if that happens.

Yep, being conference champions is important

RE: Kinda ironic
While I suspect that MS will fall from contention very soon...the reason the Memphis game is important is it is an outside the SEC school that won a ranked game.

The rest of the top SEC schools beating each other hurts the champion less. There is a committee that will decide after the seasons are all complete....and unless the SEC champion is a school like MS, which is incredibly doubtful, they will overwhelmingly and I think properly select the SEC champion for the tournament. Florida, LSU or Alabama still have the best shot if they win it...A and M as well...should any of those above win out or even if LDU loses a game.

I agree...and it may not be fair, but if they all lose twice, even only to each other, they will not likely have a selection. Tough to see both Baylor and TCU losing twice. Clemson and FSU will not both qualify...neither will both OSU and Michigan State. Doubt UTah will go undefeated but Stanford could sneak in of they remain unbeaten after their opening week loss.

Based on how teams have been paying I would suspect the LSU Alabama winner makes the playoffs, the TCU Baylor winner, the big Ten winner if they have no more than one loss, which means it must be Iowa, OSU or MSU. The other team...could be up for grabs. Keep winning.

Should MS not fall flat on their face, we will have that extra win that other schools rarely had. Boise State, Utah or earlier TCU would have qualified for a four team playoff...they came just short of a two team matchup.

Ole Miss is reeling right now after losing several more key players Saturday. I'd love for them to win out but I don't see it.

I'll play, George.

Nkemdiche gets taken out by Avery, the kid ole miss wouldn't make room for in their roster 2 years ago, so Avery comes to Memphis.

Being a conference champion was important when they were comparing P5 teams...

I hope we get to find out if it is viewed the same when comparing to a G5
