ETSU jumped the gun starting play before a campus stadium was completed. It's no wonder that the team lacks talent. Who wants to graduate from high school and play half of their college career in a high school stadium?

RE: Official Game Thread: Mercer (L 0-52)
I was at the game today. I still for the life of me can't figure out how we ended up where we did. We've got really good players that were from that first class. And they came in with no scholarships, and we didn't even know the SoCon thing was in play. To those kids, it was possible we would be in non-scholarship Pioneer League for a while. Point being, it's a minor miracle we got the players we got, and I thinks that's why we've had the success we've had.

Now, we are in central GA right in the middle of a truckload of really good football players. Which helps. We also had a few big impact transfers. But I tip my hat to Coach Lamb and Coach Cain (recruiting coordinator), because they have done some serious 'crutin since they got here.

But, to the earlier posters point, I think you are going to have to get into North GA and try to get some players.

I'll rewatch the game on ESPN3 later, but I was there live and your guys play hard. I think that's the most important thing now. But, just being honest, there was a matchup problem for you guys today against our offensive line. Which I believe is our best unit. But that takes time and linemen tend to get a lot better in college with better coaching, when they learn some technique instead of like high school when there were just overpowering everyone.

Also, you have to get better at the QB position. There were actually a good number of open throws today and your QB just missed them. Our line was really good and our QB lit it up our first year and it really made a difference.

I think our success early was a but of an anomoly that I still haven't figured out. But I think you guys will be OK. It's going to take a little time. Wish you guys luck the rest of the season and hope everyone stays healthy.

If this was hard for you to swallow, I wouldn't watch next Saturday. Montana State is not as good as advertised, but they'd demolish Mercer.

Mercer has been "demolished" once in 30 games since re-starting the football program.

Would these guys be playing college football at all without ETSU? How many of them were being recruited by other four-year colleges, even two-year colleges? i feel bad for them, sending them into these games to get their brains beat out. What possibly can they be gaining from this -- what possibly can the program be gaining from this? On the other hand, Kennesaw State entered conference play right out of the starting gate and won their first conference game yesterday. How can they have it so right and ETSU have it so wrong? That stadium they're in is a soccer field.

It is painfully obvious that the recruiting strategy was one that has left this team woefully unprepared to beat any team on their schedule. Staffing the majority of your team with local talent is NEVER going to be a good strategy! It may make for a good story in a local newspaper but it sure won't help ETSU build a team that can compete in the SC (now or 3 years from now!).

And if you played Montana State, it would be twice.

You're not focusing etsufan1.

If it makes you, somehow, feel better about yourself to wildly speculate about the relative competitiveness of Mercer Football, then rock on; but the historical facts in evidence just don't provide any support for your contention. Montana State is ranked #16 in FCS. Mercer played 2 teams that were ranked very near this ranking (#15 & #17) at the time they played Mercer in 2014 (Mercer's 1st year of Scholarship Football, BTW) and the Bears narrowly lost those games by 5 and 7 points...with the ball and a chance to win in the 4th quarter in both of those games. Certainly not a "demolishing." Not at all.

It's not all about Mercer. Get over yourself. Go back to your message board if all you want to hear is peachy pie in the sky Mercer talk.

etsufan1 - You're the one who brought up Mercer in the 1st place. You needn't say anything "peachy pie-ish" about Mercer if you do not wish to do so; however, if you make a wild negative speculation about the quality of the team that I support in a public forum, I do feel that it is 'in bounds' to comment on such speculation and to provide some facts that contradict your mere conjecture. I'm sure if the Admins of this Board feel my comments are out of bounds, they can delete them and/or ban me from commenting.

The only bad coaching decisions I saw from those games was the Maryville game where we rotated the 2 QBs. Besides that I thought the other decisions like going for it on 4th down were good calls. They put it on the team to win it and they just didnt have it.

If that is the schedule, I don't see a single win.

For our remaining non-conference games, we need to schedule "real" cream puffs.

That would only be two, maybe only one if we have to return the St Francis game. We're up against it big time next year no matter what. Just don't schedule Carson-Newman and/or Tusculum for the next five years at least, maybe even UVa-Wise.
