Another big time program stepping away from Adidas

Wisconsin is now switching from Adidas to Under Armor. The second B10 school to go away from Adidas this year, with the other being Michigan. Is the switch away from Adidas coming soon for NIU too? 05-stirthepot

So far Toledo is the only Under Armor school in the MAC.

JC signed a 5 year deal just before our Orange Bowl bid. However the agreement is for five 1 year terms and its very easy to get out of...mainly (as I understand it) because we are actually paying Adidas for the equipment.

We better not switch anytime soon. All my gear will be outdated.

Some of the UA stuff NIU has is pretty nice! The VCB has gotten a few charges from me as of late for it. Wouldn't be mad at them for going UA. HELL, when we went to the Orange Bowl, Dicks had NIU pullovers by UA. I felt guilty at first for buying knowing that we are Adidas, but then I thought, HELL, I'm no athlete! Psssh!

Wait, we pay them to advertise for their company? Meanwhile they pay other schools millions and give them free equipment as well. Jeez, Jeff Compher was an excellent negotiator. Thank goodness he's gone.

Based on the article below, most MAC schools (none of the ones they listed) don't get paid anything by their uniform suppliers and have a relatively limited budget of free equipment. Anything beyond that and the schools pays for it. They should have included the years the deals were signed because some of these have been in place for 10-15 years and others were just signed in the last year or two.

Wow, those are some terrible numbers for not only NIU but other MAC teams. $150k for 450(?) student athletes. I can see why NIU is paying for equipment. $333 per player is not going to buy much.

For the part Adidas actually supplies I can see where it wouldn't be too hard to stretch that. I'm confused why Texas State has a better deal, though it could clearly be way worse. Athletes at big schools must be swimming in free shoes and gear.

They were/are. The football players I knew at Illinois had all kinds of Nike-issued apparel. They had to give it back at the end of the year (and the school would then sell that gear to fans, plus Nike-issued stuff that hadn't been worn) but during the school year those guys were head-to-toe in Nike stuff. Shoes, hoodies, polos, pants, etc. They could have probably gone the entire school year without wearing anything but Nike Illinois stuff had they felt like it.
