RE: D-Hub
Don't feel like starting a new thread for this campus construction-related news so I'll just post it here. Serious prep work has begun for the Hotel Madison and Conference Center on Main St. Over the weekend the beautiful old pine trees (35-40' tall) were cut down. Looks rather like a moonscape now.

The 1000 car parking garage next the the Hotel site is almost ready to open, and the new Health building is moving people in.

Finally, some shuffling/remodeling is beginning for Carrier Library. The check-out desk will undergo modifications, and the original entrance to the library will reopen and become the main entrance again. The original entrance hasn't been open for use in over 20 years.

That's great to hear!, I loved that part of the building, It's got more character than the newer side and smells like a library should.

Exactly what I was thinking. Always wondered why they did not use the original entrance, glad they are putting it back to use!

Also - looks like on the webcam that everything is down and its just dirt and rock!

RE: D-Hub
there will be an expansion for Carrier Library but it's not on the books yet. Probably on the 5 year plan though. Wilson Hall will be the next renovation.

Carrier was penciled in for a $90 million expansion or something like it...the timing is up in the air. Probably in the third 2 year planning cycle.

Looks like they are hauling out the last of the concrete slab and rear wall from the first floor. Looks like it is pretty much so all dirt at this point.

RE: D-Hub
no micropiling for DHub. Project manager told me Wednesday they are encountering so much rock they're exploring other options. Blasting was eliminated because of the proximity of so many buildings and building entrances, bringing in extra jack hammers, etc. Foundation will NOT be a problem on this site haha (w/ respect to micropiling).

That entire location is on the down-slope of a giant piece of solid rock. Thank goodness they've opted out of blasting, but it's going to be a bear to jack-hammer.

RE: D-Hub
micropiling was used on BFS because they could not install the ordinary large pilings due to close proximity of underground utilities between the parking deck and BFS. North end of BFS has large normal pillings. The hill around D-Hall is the fill dirt that was in the area that made Newman Lake. A few years ago while they were rerouting Steam lines I looked into the ditch and saw the original road that used to go down toward the the Godwin Hall area was uncovered. some of the contractors were surprised to see s paved road 20 ft under the ground. I have seen a lot of the substructure around JMU.

RE: D-Hub
A week or two ago, JMU issued an RFP for Architecture/Engineering services for the demolition and reconstruction of an expanded PC Dukes/Phillips Hall, so I guess that's now become an official JMU project. The pitch was that since Aramark built D-Hub to offset the need for food service while D-Hall was being replaced, it would be in the best financial interest to go ahead and do Phillips Hall while a suitable temporary dining solution was already in place. So D-Hub replaces D-Hall for school years 2016 and 2017, then when D-Hall is done PC Dukes will close for demolition and reconstruction in 2018 and 2019. Somewhere in there the CoB project will probably kick off, requiring the demolition of Chandler hall (and Mrs Greens), and that appears to be slated to begin in summer 2018.

JMU Dining is going to have some nice options over the coming years.
