RE: Week 4 vs App State
For the Appy fans coming to Norfolk; I hope you are greeted warmly at our tailgates, meet the best of us on the concourse, the weather is lovely, you eat some of our best food, find the drinks as cold as you want them and have a long sad drive home. Good luck and safe travels!

Really excited to watch this game. Seen the Norfolk game and the NC State game, and I feel like App is closer to hitting its stride than ODU. Having a bye week after the Clemson loss should be a benefit. There were two very good defenses on the field at Clemson. One just had a higher caliber offense backing it up. I expect the App offense to wake up sooner rather than later.

This game means a ton with bowl implications, I think the first half will be hard fought and close somewhere in the 21-13 range. Second half the Mountaineers' experience / depth will open the scoreboard up a bit, 35-20 App State.

Weather report now says an inch of rain with 40 mph wind gusts. This should be a fun game.

Podcast by App fan, of course their is a black and gold bias, but some discussion in the 17th-27th minute on this game.
I think both defenses are underrated in this game. I predict a slow start for App and I hope for ODU as well.

This favors ODU. If it comes down to sheer size and ball security, we should win. Tyler Fisher, Tyler Burns and Ray Lawry are a solid combination.
Will likely come down to Satchell Ziffer and Reed Buce in special teams.

agree that bad weather favors ODU, worries me that we are a slow starting team that gets stronger and stronger as the game progresses, one of these games a team, maybe ODU, is going to jump on us early, get a sizeable lead, and we are going to have a hard time catching up. I think one big advantage App has is our run game, ODU gave up 256 yds on the ground to Eastern Michigan and 256 to State. App should be able run the ball very effectively. I think if the wind and rain are as bad as predicted, and this becomes a contest of running offenses, I like our chances.

I dont know if you can compare the App State defense to the Clemson defense. Thats like comparing hill billy mountain folk to orange tigers.

Yeah that App State defense is a good defense, held Clemson to just 41 points.

Do you believe Clemson or NCSU has the better offense, I could be wrong, but most football analyst would say Clemson. I know Clemson's defense is better, they have two dlineman and 1 CB that are 1st or 2nd round picks.
For reference:
NCSU - ODU had no turnovers
435 yards
4.9 ypc rushing
9-16 on 3rd down
Clemson - App four turnovers including a pick 6
392 yards
3.2 ypc rushing
5-15 on 3rd down
Those stats tell me App should have the edge on defense. ODU's secondary may be better than App's however.

RE: Week 4 vs App State
Clemson only scored 17 points on drives of 50 yds or longer, and they kept their starters in until the forth, had no problem stopping them on long drives, turnovers killed us, well that and I have never seen such great athletes on the defensive side, on the interception for a td, the 300 lb defensive tackle dropped 10 yds into coverage, stepped in front of our receiver, made the interception, than outran everyone , 25 yds to the endzone. I have never seen such a play by a 300 lb lineman, and the look on our qb's face showed he had never seen a player like that either. The positive is we will never see a defense that good the rest of the year, atleast, I hope.

I'd actually say both are fairly equal. Lets not kid ourselves, the weather will make this game on Saturday ugly and will equalize the teams.

I think Clemson stopped trying after they got 28 pts in the 2nd quarter and then went up 38-0 early in the third. Thats why they pulled watson and went to 2 different backups. If Clemson played their starters the whole game like state did to ODU the score would have been much worse. ODU's offense killed the defense. NC state played 35 more offense snaps than ODU. And the time of possession was heavy in NC states favor. But we still fought to the end and the score was not that bad. State scored a garbage touchdown at the end to get the 38 pts. Clemson got to 38 pts early in the third quarter. Enough said.
As for the offense I think our running game is much better than App states. And our passing game has a lot more potential.
Im predicting and ODU victory

One thing EMU had that you do not is a running QB. We have always struggled with dual threat QBs and Eastern Michigan got a lot of rushing yards from him. Without the threat of run from your QB we will be able to focus on your running back.

In your evaluation are you putting NCSU on the same level as Clemson?
That would be dangerous logic.
You have a very good running back, but to claim your running game is much better, do some research on Marcus Cox.

Two things I learned watching our game vs. Clemson and your game vs. NCSU. If we turn the ball over 3+ times we will lose, if your WRs drop balls at the same rate you'll lose this weekend. Your QB is going to be a good one and maybe sooner than later. Just hope he waits one more game.

RE: Week 4 vs App State
another factor is App goes 3 deep at the running back position, its not just Cox you have to stop, Upshaw is a more explosive runner. We tend to wear down defenses by rotating fresh backs in, usually, defenses hold them in check our first 2 or 3 series, and it looks like it will be a long day running the ball, but gradually, all these backs wear a defense down, and by mid third, they are picking up huge chunks of yds. I think it will be one of the keys to this game, ODU needs to count on the 2nd string players coming in and giving the starters some breathers, if they cant, and the starters play most of the game, I thing App slowly wears your defensive front down, and we start running the ball effectively in the 3rd and 4th quarter.
