Just heard about Canale's this afternoon. Another Memphis institution bites the dust. I hate it when things like this happen. We need constants.

My dad graduated from Catholic in 67 or 68. I graduated from CBC/CBHS in 90. Don't think we have played since the 1970's.

You're a mere child.

Yeah, I still think of CBHS Walnut Grove as the new campus.

It's a shame that the Brothers didn't buy that farmland behind the school when they had the chance.

Yep; Mr. Charlie lived on the curve there on Houston Levee right before you got to the Canale store.

“Our motto is ‘Stack ’em high, sell ’em low, wrap ’em up and let ’em go,’” says owner Justin Canale with a chuckle. “Everything we offer is to-go.”

I ate there all the time, as someone else said, I loved the simplicity of the place. Their ham was awesome. Plus, they sold Sundrop! I am now looking for a similar type place to get a coldcut sandwich on white bread. I wish I could have told Mr. Conn goodbye, he was always very nice to me. 03-weeping03-weeping 03-weeping 03-weeping

There is a story in the CA explaining why they closed.

Thanks for the info on the story in the CA.

My uncle played for South Side in the 1930's, and he was a legend. Imagine that! Another uncle played for Catholic. My father played for MUS and Central. Those Central-Catholic games were tough. Good times!

The Rendezvous's ham sandwich is a well-kept secret. Swing by and get one on a weekend, and then go sit and watch the river flow by as you nosh down.

RE: End of an era
I forgot all about this in the hoopla last week surrounding the Cincinnati game, but I was in the area and stopped by Canale's on Friday the 18th. They were actually open, they were trying to empty the gas tanks and sell all the fuel, and were also selling drinks, chips, etc, the remaining store stock (no ham!). I talked to the folks there for a while, Mr. Conn was in a recliner taking a nap. A couple of things from my visit, Mr. Conn is in poor health and needs your thoughts and prayers. When asked if they planned on selling the store, I was told they had not decided, but had been approached by a couple different people interested in perhaps buying it. But it seems like they might also consider keeping it and reopening if Mr. Conn's health got better, perhaps in a few months, maybe or maybe not.

Anyone else hear anything?

Friend's dad (Catholic High Grad) took us young grade schoolers to Catholic vs CBHS game on Thanksgiving and taught us to sing this Catholic High Fight Song. lol.. Still remember the commotion it caused when the band struck up and I sang out:

Cheer Cheer for old Catholic high
You bring the whiskey I'll bring the rye
Send the Freshman out for gym
And don't let a sober sophomore in

We never stagger We never fall
We sober up on wood alcohol
While our loyal faculty
Lies drunk in the study hall

rah rah rah

C A T H O L I C
Catholic is the one school for me
Fight Fight Fight we do it right
Victory is tonight!

etc etc etc

I don't think that that Catholic "bought" any kind of championsship in sports. Catholic was defitley little brother to CBHS. Catholic had no money, CBHS had all the big money. Catholic was were blue collar families sent their kids. It always was struggling for money. If a kid was really googd in football he ended up at CBHS.
