College of Charleston getting the fever?
Now CoC is studying. LOL. I don't know where this thing ends, but with their athletic history and all those football players in that area, I think (just like us) they would get good, real fast in FCS.

People can talk about markets not mattering all they want, but Coastal is sprinting through FCS like we did because of their location. And with the right coaching hire, these guys would take their place as a FCS power within 5 years of startup.

Coastal really isn't sprinting at our pace. Their inaugural season was in 2003, that's pratically snail-paced compared to us.

When I lived in Myrtle, Tyler Thigpen was their QB (a pretty good one at that) and they couldn't give away tickets. And looking at their attendance, it doesn't look like much has changed.

They have a good coach who has built a good FCS program but the support just isn't there to compare them to us.

I agree with that. I don't think there is anyone that was as overdue for football as much as ODU was. And our historic pace proves it--to me at least.

But Coastal's story is still quite good given how small that school is in Conway. I used to visit it every year when on vacation in Myrtle and it used to be very unimpressive. Now they are rolling, their football is good (in relatively short order from startup) and I think CoC would do well too. Recruiting matters in these populated areas. And they will eventually get their fan base up.

That would be some good local rivalries if Charleston moves up to FBS (over JMU? :)) Maybe the hypothetical CUSA/SUNBelt realignment were to ever happen.
ODU, UNCC, Coastal, App State the two Georgia's, Marshall, Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky. Would save a ton on travel costs.
Would make for some great regional matches and travel is more realistic then to the TX games. Not the highest quality of programs in that mix though.

Charleston's issue is they have nowhere to put a stadium on or near campus. Plus there's two FCS programs in Charleston already (Charleston Southern and The Citadel), and while the region theoretically could support a third one, I think it takes them way longer to get their sea legs than even Coastal Carolina.

Has anyone shared this link with the JMU board yet?
