USF made it to March Madness recently.... Does that make them a Basketball school??? No, they are a Football school because that is what they are know for.

When I think Temple Athletics... I think Basketball. I imagine the rest of the nation agrees with me.

I would define a good year as above .500 myself, plus most schools considered football schools play in their own stadiums. Don't take that as disrespect for Temple (my sister went there and an old Army buddy was a prof there), but I just think a lot of elements define a football school.

Temple was our toughest opponent last year. Not my opinion. Straight from a guy who currently is a defensive starter

FWIW

RE: Is Temple becoming a football school?
I have several cousins that are Temple grads from Philly. They only attend football games against high profile opponents, whether at home or on the road. Until Temple can convince them to attend home games against lessor known opponents, than I don't think Temple will be perceived as a school with FBS potential. In other words, get football fans to fill out the lower bowl at Lincoln Field.

Agreed. I think we could get there. I've had basketball season tickets with several friends since we graduated a few years ago, but we rarely attend football games.

I'm really optimistic about our football program though. Fielding a respectable program has taken a while, but we're there.

I went to the Temple/Maryland game where we annihilated you at home. Your students have zero interest in going to football games, and we had to have someone drive us to the stadium. Myself, my best friend and his friends from George Mason were louder than your 20 person student section. I wouldn't really talk, because Maryland's football support is embarrassing.

Please...we've played Temple a total of 8 games of which we lost only one game, in 2011 when we were 2-10. Big deal. The fans will return after the unpopular Randy Edsall is fired.

My point stands though. Get the fans to attend home games, and the perception of Temple will turn positive.

I like Rhule's enthusiasm for both Philly and the prospects of Temple football. Hopefully P.J. Walker will return to freshman form and Phil Snow will improve on already very good defense.

If that's not why you were thrown out, then what was the actual reason? I wasn't following College Football at the time, so I'd like to know the story.

Lack of investment in the football program. We put everything into basketball, which obviously is our better sport historically. We were very close to dropping football because a lot of people in Temple's administration at that time thought it was a waste of money. That is obviously no longer the case.

UC was there about 20 years ago....they came REAL close to dropping football. REAL close.

UC considered dropping football in the mid-90's? Do you have a source for this, I've never heard that before.

Houston, too. During the Dimel years, when Bill Carr was our AD and we were at our all-time low point, we apparently came really close. Instead, we hired Art Briles, who revitalized our program.

Interestingly enough, it was Bill Carr's consulting firm that convinced UAB to shut down their football program.

RE: Is Temple becoming a football school?
(08-29-2015 03:34 PM)Philly Brian Wrote:  One thing that I forgot to mention is that the local media coverage has increased dramatically for Temple football. I would say that there are 10 Temple football stories written for each Penn State story. Unlike in the past, there is almost no Rutgers, Syracuse or Pitt stories in the newspaper. College football coverage by the local media is now 90% Temple whereas in the past it may have been 30% Temple.

It's an exciting time to be a Temple football supporter. A win next week would lay the ground work for this to be the best season ever for Temple. I do feel that even if we lose a few games, if we make to a bowl game the momentum will continue.

Now a bad season such as 5-7 would be a setback considering all of the seniors that we will lose.
My point is that we have a loaded team and a schedule where we can make some noise on the national scene.

Brian this is simply not true what you've written. Out of curiousity I looked at Sunday's Philadelphia Inquirer sports section. On the front page is an article "Hackenberg Tests the System", all about the Penn St. quartetback. Inside is another long article titled "Lions Feel Ready to Roar" The paper will do Temple and other schools this upcoming week. To say 90% of the coverage is Temple related is ridiculous. Penn St. remains the most popular team in Philadelphia, as it is in the rest of the state. Temple has a great chance to make inroads this year with marquee matchups with ND and Penn St. and if they steal a win out of those two, they can take a major step forward. But until that happens, Temple is still fighting an uphill battle to win over the city. When Temple plays their home game against Penn St. next week it will be interesting to see who has the majority of the crowd behind them.

I can easily see half (or more) of Lincoln Financial Field draped in blue and white. Hopefully, I'm wrong, but my father always called Lincoln Financial Field Beaver Stadium East for a reason.

I doubt they can beat Ped St. with the QB and offense they have unless they're a lot better than last season. That defense could win it for them if the offense takes care of the ball.
