Gavitt games
so we know 5 games now....
Nebraska @ Villanova
Xavier @ Michigan
Creighton @ Indiana
Rutgers @ St Johns
Illinois @ Providence

my hunch is Seton Hall and Butler are out(both play in tournaments starting the Thursday- the Gavitt games are Tue-Fri).

RE: Gavitt games
why are the matchups dripping out one at a time? Is it for suspense or are they making it up as they go?

RE: Gavitt games
It's probably for the suspense. not many more they would need to announce..

1 bad thing that I mentioned over on the other board- the Friday of this event will get totally overshadowed by the exempt tournaments. This looks like another thing where the concept sounds great- but it's not. The exempt tournaments are much more important than this game.

RE: Gavitt games
Sounds like the other 3 games are
Georgetown/Maryland
Iowa/Marquette
Penn St/DePaul

by and large I think not too bad. I think the ones that are unhappy are ones that thought it'd be all the top programs each year from the Big Ten, which was never going to happen.

it's the Tuesday-Friday after the 1st weekend of the season(this year Nov 17-20). 2 games per night.

RE: Gavitt games
so the 8 matchups are set...
Georgetown @ Maryland
Xavier @ Michigan
Creighton @ Indiana
Rutgers @ St John's
Illinois @ Providence
Nebraska @ Villanova
Penn St @ DePaul
Iowa @ Marquette

One thing that is really interesting is Big East gets 5 home games and Big Ten 3. However probably would say Big Ten gets the 3 best games. I wonder if one of the Big East home games was agreed to move to ESPN/Big Ten network.

RE: Gavitt games
Who came up with these match-ups?

Should've been:
DePaul vs Northwestern
Villanova vs Penn State
Creighton vs Nebraska
Butler vs Indiana
Xavier vs Ohio State
Seton Hall vs Rutgers
Marquette vs Wisconson

Only one that they got right was:
Georgetown vs Maryland

Gotta do regional "rivalries" to kick this off, comon now.

part of it was that Butler and Seton Hall weren't available(they're playing in exempt tournaments that start that Thursday. Also, PC was going to be in this year one hosting period the end- with it being the Gavitt games. And some of your matchups already had gotten done regular season.

Each year Seton Hall is already playing Rutgers, Creighton is already playing Nebraska and Marquette is already playing Wisconsin, so those games will never be part of the challenge. DePaul and Northwestern have been playing some in recent years. Butler plays Indiana and Purdue in alternate years so those games will not be part of it either. The rest of your proposal may happen at some point.

yeah I agree.

One thing that will be interesting to watch is will the yearly matchups favor the Big Ten in terms of who is hosting(and thus controls the TV). This year you could make the case that the top 3 games are Big Ten hosted. Top 2 for sure(Georgetown/Maryland, Xavier/Michigan), and you can make the case that Creighton/Indiana is 3rd over Iowa/Marquette or Illinois/Providence.

In Lunardi's 1st bracketology he had them in as a 10 seed. So solid for sure.

So the Illinois-PC game should be a good one. (in theory)

Yeah. I just think the Creighton/Indiana game is better- think Indiana may be a preseason top 20 team and Creighton should be much improved. PC even with Dunn coming back has a lot of questions. They still lost Henton, Desrossiers, and Harris- 2 starters and 6th man. I think you guys are going to be right on that bubble all year long next year. I think Dunn is going to see a ton of junk defenses and will be the focus of all the coaches next year.
