Honestly, unless you freak out and pull out money prematurely, you'll make decent gains playing the market on fairly stable stocks and ETFs. For the average American, taking a risk here and there is fine and can net you a really nice gain, but even if you lose money on the risk, the stable investments generally keep your portfolio in the positive (in the long-term). IMO, just invest in what you believe in (I wish more of my generation would put money in the stock market but I can totally understand their hesitance).

I can understand the hesitancy for folks that grew up through the recent financial crises. I also hope those approaching retirement are conservative as heck. However, I just don't understand people that fail to invest in their 401k up to the company match, if they are lucky enough to have a company match. Where else can on get a 100% return on their money?

agreed. The only thing I don't like is the company match being 50% in the company stock. I feel a tad uneasy about that after the Tyco, Enrons, etc of the last decade.

Based on historic performance, think of this as the market going on sale.

Yeah, matching in company stock is kind of crappy.

It's a great day to buy. Next week will be positive, but I'd be short in the upcoming months.

Sometimes you can make easy and fast money in a BEAR market. The bounces in a bear can be huge and quick.

like playing the don't pass, one has to be able to absorb the losses....it's riskier when looking long.....but it's easily the quickest way to make it happen....

I chose quickest based on my lifestyle 03-wink

Yep, the world is not ending. This is normal in the economic cycle. Investors get ahead of themselves and this sell off is primarily due to China.

We've seen this play out many times over the decades. The silver lining here is that there will be a huge buying opportunity.

it's almost the same as the year end sell trend that is almost predictable......

you can win both ways....it's just that one is safer than the other....I am fearful that the numbers will overwhelm in about twenty years.....that puts me at 70.....if I make it to that age, I want to be out of this country with enough money to fish, play golf, play with the costa chicks, AND leave enough for my daughter so she doesn't have to sweat it out....THAT has become my goal....

I would't jump in the stock market now...after the real correction maybe, but I am pessimistic about the "real" economy and don't think we have ever truly recovered from the "Bush Recession".

there is another factor that I never see mentioned....I am of the opinion that 401ks have built this market....

that one could be bigger than the tulips at some point....especially when the dems decide it's time to tax the roths or tax the 401ks at another level.....if people don't see that one coming, they're just being stupid....

no fk'n way would I play long right now....

Noon update:

Dow: -264/ 1.5%
S&P: -32/ 1.6%
Nasdaq: -85/1.75%
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Yea, I sure as hell wouldn't jump in the market while it's falling. Maybe once the dust settles. I feel as if these past 2-3 days are just the first of many falls before the end of October.

Do you remember Slick Willy's plan to save Social Security? Imagine what that would have done to the market.
