Rice and UH get some nice national publicity

I feel that if we were looking for a new head FB, Herman would be the sort our new AD would take a hard look at
Six years from now Bailiff may be ready for retirement, Herman after a nice run at UH, may take a long look at the B1G HC position opening at his former employer across town...
Kaargard would hire him for us to make sure we're set before heading back to his own alma mater.

Good discussion of this on the conference board.
But it doesn't much matter. We have the means and opportunities to change perceptions of our team and conference. The time for opinions is ending, the time for performing is near. Looking forward to actual play.
Not too many Rice mentions, there is positive pub for Jackson. Overall, it's down on the conference, but is expected.
"Rice hasn't lost many times during the past two years, finishing a combined 18-9 with a conference championship, but the nature of those nine losses stand out. They've been nearly universally ugly: Rice's nine defeats have come by an average score of 45-22. To be fair, the Owls have lost twice to Texas A&M and once to both Notre Dame and Mississippi State. A year ago, however, Rice lost to league frontrunners Marshall and Louisiana Tech by a combined score of 117-45."

And that, in a nut shell, is the dichotomy of Rice football over the last 3 years of "historical success". We rack of a winning, bowl-eligible record against teams in the bottom quadrant of the FBS division....but have shown a disturbing inability to even compete with teams ranked in the Top 75 (let alone the Top 50). In the opinion of many of us, this issue has more to do with poor game preparation, conservative playing calling and execution than any talent gap. (Yes, there is a talent gap vis-à-vis Top 35 teams, but this in itself does not explain how badly we have been consistently blown out in these games.)

They pull no punches, listing the bad as well as the good.
Yep, certainly not a plateau we want to stay on, but overall still a step up from before. I for one never to want to see Rice on the wrong end of a lopsided score again.
So, living in the present, let's play football! To hell with what he thinks. let's prove him wrong.

He doesn't pick many of our guys as conference standouts. He has DJ as the 3rd best returning QB. He is really high on WKU...i know very little about them..are they really that good?
As mentioned elsewhere his gap between best and worst case for Rice is literally 2 games. Either 6 wins or 8 wins. I guess that fits with his picture of a steady post season presence. However, I think we actually have the best shot at the Access bowl, given the schedule. If we somehow went 11-1 with the only loss at Baylor and the conference championship, that's arguably better than a WKU 11-1 with 1 loss to LSU. Anyways, good fair coverage of the conference. Now lets just prove him wrong!
Go Owls!

I'm no expert on WKU but I expect them to lose when they come to HRS. Sure, we've gotten blown out by top 50 teams but how many of those happened at HRS? Our defense plays a lot better at home, even against the really potent offenses. And mid major programs that come to HRS for the first time usually don't do well.

In 2014, WKU had 4,866 passing yards (8.7 yds/pass) and 2,084 rushing yards (4.9 yds/run). That is 1,857 more passing yards than Rice (similar yardage per pass, but way more passes) and only 97 fewer rushings yards (but much better yards per run). The only team to hold WKU under 30 points was LaTech in a game where WKU committed an uncharacteristic 5 turnovers (only 13 in WKU's other 12 games). To be blunt, WKU's 2014 offense was fearsome.
In 2015, they return their starting QB (6th-year Sr Brandon Doughty), their top 2 rushers (Sr Leon Allen and RS Jr Anthony Wales), and their #1 receiver (RS Sr Jared Dangerfield), as well as a couple of their other top receivers. To be blunt, WKU's 2015 offense should be even more fearsome.
WKU's defense was pretty bad in 2014 ... but they return their top 4 tacklers, their top 5 sack leaders, their top 5 tackle-for-loss leaders, and their top INT guy.
I'm glad Rice gets WKU at home. I've had this game (mentally) circled on my (mental) calendar since the schedule came out. I'm very concerned about matching up with WKU, Rice's recent history against 6th-year QB's isn't great.

??? And why/how exactly should it be "more fearsome"? BTW, their offensive numbers were inflated by their very, very weak schedule last year. Also, Rice returns their own 5th year QB, their top 4 RBs, their Top 2 TEs (one of whom missed most of last year with injury) and all but two of their top receivers. I'm not saying WKU does not deserve their Top 50 preseason billing, and they'll no doubt be a formidable opponent, but let's not over build them up.

geesh big article on Tom Herman in the weekend wall street journal "Houston's experiment: An Urban Meyer Clone"
man, they must really be working the publicity outlets. On the other hand, I walked into a CVS and saw a Rice FB poster. Big improvement there as I am used to seeing way too much UH stuff.......

Surprised this hasn't been posted yet. I think this is a great form of publicity every year.
