Houston Chronicle article on Major Applewhite ... telling quotes about Rice
From an article in today's Houston Chronicle about Major Applewhite (now OC at UH):

Joseph Duarte Wrote:At Rice, he learned to make do with the resources available. Applewhite said that before the season, the team would knock on doors around campus trying to sell season tickets. That year, the Owls set a school record for points and played in a bowl for the first time in 45 years.

"From Todd, I learned that an abundance of resilience and determination can overcome a lack of resources and talent," he said. "Every time you turn around, the word no is said. You turn around and didn't say anything, and somebody told you no."

A few months later, Applewhite was at Alabama with Nick Saban, coaching at a spring game with "93,000 fans in attendance and another 20,000 trying to get in."

"I've been places where you're trying to raise money almost like a bake sale to buy new lockers and paint the walls, and then some places where they are breaking ground on $200 million athletic complexes."

I'm glad things are turning around. Bake sales! Grrr.

I hope he is not expecting crowds of 93,000 at UH.

Yeah ... TDECU only seats c. 40,000. UH would need to bring in temporary bleachers for that sized crowd. 05-stirthepot

That worked well the last time they tried it.

The change in attitude in marketing and in general is amazing. I just hope it is not too late. Sadly TCU started this 15+ years ago while we fiddled.....

It will be interesting if he has better luck developing quarterbacks at UH. He was not that successful at Texas.

Added Applewhite "I much prefer an environment supported by ample state funding and an utter lack of institutional control. The added benefit of coming to the University of Houston is that the relative lack of fan support is unlikely to draw scrutiny of my bowl game activities."

He's not entirely wrong or right, but I take it as more indicative of typical low grade recruiting tactics to bring this stuff up now. He did a good job for us, but we gave him that shot when nobody else would. Hasn't done much since. Let's get it on!

Their new Stadium is just a couple of grades above "Erector Set" anyway.

Does that MEAN what it sounds like? Did he really say that?

No he didn't actually say that. Hutch is satirizing.
