RE: What can be done to improve attendance in the MAC?
From what I have seen recently most stadiums are going down in capacity but increasing the perks and quality seats that they offer.

Kent has reduced seating but is a much better venue now than it was. Oddly on average we have more fans in the stands now than when we had a bigger stadium.

Weather is huge in kzoo whether it's October or November, they seem to never have a good forcast when UT goes up there. I hope WMU does draw big numbers at home and they bring a section in late November to the Glass Bowl.

Baylor built theres for 45k but already expanding it to 55k which is bigger than their old one.

Who looks to demolish stadiums, or for that matter to downsize them? Maybe schools in the MAC, but most others are not looking to reduce the footprint of their stadiums. One can go as far back as 1903 when Harvard built their stadium (out of reinforced concrete) and they are still using it today.
Didn't Akron build their stadium to hold 30,000 spectators? How about Western and Central? I haven't seen any talk of down sizing there? Maybe it's just an Ohio thing for the MAC, but then.....Akron.

List of teams who have recently downsized their current stadium or built a new stadium with a smaller capacity:

College:
Baylor
Minnesota
Kentucky
Stanford
Washington
Arizona State
California
Purdue
Illinois
Colorado

NFL:
Washington Redskins
Jacksonville Jaguars
Oakland Raiders
Kansas City Chiefs
Miami Dolphins
Cleveland Browns
Buffalo Bills

I'm sure I missed several others. Nope. No one does it.

ok let's get the Gophers straightened out... They were sharing a 64K seat professional stadium which was demolished and they built a 50K on campus stadium which is now being leased by an NFL team..

That's hardly a downgrade.

Its still a reduction of 14,000 seats

Add NDSU

20,000/game guarantee. (They've sold out within 1 hour for entire year)

NDSU Fanbase brings 2000-3000/ away game right now & probably more with a FBS addition

I would love to see the Mid American Conference add the 4 time defending FBS National Champions. It would be great to have a team from western part of the Midwest.

I do have a question for you though. How hard would it be to expand the dome from a 20,000 seat stadium to a 30,000 seat stadium. Most of our stadiums seat 30,00.

So you can underwhelm against FBS opponents? You couldn't even handle your opener =p

You really think that number is sustainable when you're not perpetually ranked #1 in your division?

RE: What can be done to improve attendance in the MAC?
UT was selling outlike crazy when we were MAC powers in the 2000's. 5-10k over capacity every night. But that changed quickly when the tradition of winning changed. In ND their aint much to do so the fair weather fans could be few and far between... Not an NDSU fan so Idk. Still. You cant say those numbers would stay the same on hard times, especially when travel for all MAC games would be flights.

I must admit to the idea that NDSU and JMU might add some vigor to the very staid MAC. Since I'm not responsible for the costs of said change, I can throw that out there freely. 04-rock

We get 22k for Morehead State. EMU got 6k for ODU.

What a crock

EMU should give up the ghost. History says there will be no turnaround there.

Hm I tempted to tell you to **** it. Football has been at EMU for 124 years. I seeing football being at EMU for a long time to come. And by the way I didn't think EMU counted students for that game with ODU. Looking at the stands there were more than the announced attendance.

Yea, I'm sure a school with a history of horrible attendance purposely reduces their counted attendance.

Dear JMU2004.
Know what you talk about. Our history is not of horrible attendance. Recently, yes, but before this time we had many sellouts in our stadium. There will be a turn around with our record as well.

As I posted in the attendance thread, number was more around 10k. Students and parents that were there before the game and stayed for the game (and they did with the way EMU started) aren't counted and due to the school switching to designated seating a lot of tickets were given away for free due to the long lines that made me miss the first quarter, which also can't be counted according to NCAA guidelines.
