while we wait for the rocket to the moon...

[Image: STSCI-J-p2022-HIP65426b-f-1528x1130-1-1024x757.png]
This image shows the exoplanet HIP 65426 b in different bands of infrared light, as seen from the James Webb Space Telescope: purple shows the NIRCam instrument’s view at 3.00 micrometers, blue shows the NIRCam instrument’s view at 4.44 micrometers, yellow shows the MIRI instrument’s view at 11.4 micrometers, and red shows the MIRI instrument’s view at 15.5 micrometers. These images look different because of the ways the different Webb instruments capture light. A set of masks within each instrument, called a coronagraph, blocks out the host star’s light so that the planet can be seen. The small white star in each image marks the location of the host star HIP 65426, which has been subtracted using the coronagraphs and image processing. The bar shapes in the NIRCam images are artifacts of the telescope’s optics, not objects in the scene. (Unlabeled version here.) Credit: NASA/ESA/CSA, A Carter (UCSC), the ERS 1386 team, and A. Pagan (STScI).

NASA’s Webb Takes Its First-Ever Direct Image of Distant World

now this is the kinda stuff I've been waiting for. Someday we'll learn to warp space, get the hyperdrive workin', set sail for those far off lands...

Monday, Sept. 26
6 p.m. – Live coverage begins for NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft impact with the asteroid Dimorphos (Impact targeted for 7:14 p.m. EDT)

Quote:NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), the world’s first full-scale mission to test technology for defending Earth against potential asteroid or comet hazards, launched Wednesday, November 24, 2021.

ust one part of NASA’s larger planetary defense strategy, DART – built and managed by the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland – will impact a known asteroid that is not a threat to Earth. Its goal is to slightly change the asteroid’s motion in a way that can be accurately measured using ground-based telescopes.

DART will show that a spacecraft can autonomously navigate to a target asteroid and intentionally collide with it – a method of deflection called kinetic impact. The test will provide important data to help better prepare for an asteroid that might pose an impact hazard to Earth, should one ever be discovered. LICIACube, a CubeSat riding with DART provided by the Italian Space Agency (ASI), will be released prior to DART’s impact to capture images of the impact and the resulting cloud of ejected matter. Roughly four years after DART’s impact, ESA’s (European Space Agency) Hera project will conduct detailed surveys of both asteroids, with particular focus on the crater left by DART’s collision and a precise determination of Dimorphos’ mass.

so, this is pretty cool: New Webb Image Captures Clearest View of Neptune’s Rings in Decades

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope shows off its capabilities closer to home with its first image of Neptune. Not only has Webb captured the clearest view of this distant planet’s rings in more than 30 years, but its cameras reveal the ice giant in a whole new light.

Most striking in Webb’s new image is the crisp view of the planet’s rings – some of which have not been detected since NASA’s Voyager 2 became the first spacecraft to observe Neptune during its flyby in 1989. In addition to several bright, narrow rings, the Webb image clearly shows Neptune’s fainter dust bands.

“It has been three decades since we last saw these faint, dusty rings, and this is the first time we’ve seen them in the infrared,” notes Heidi Hammel, a Neptune system expert and interdisciplinary scientist for Webb. Webb’s extremely stable and precise image quality permits these very faint rings to be detected so close to Neptune.

looks like Artemis will be rolled back to the VAB, but Ian might have something to say about the schedule...currently, earliest new launch date is Oct 2nd for the moment...

RE: OT: NASA/Space Thread also PLUTO/New Horizons
Watching the images (not quite live), leading to impact, I was reminded of a tale of the Ranger 9 lunar probe. A simple Google search turned up confirmation that I wasn't just imagining things.

Ranger 9 was a mission to take detailed images of the lunar surface, ending in impact on the surface. The last image in the series could resolve an object one foot in diameter. Similar to the view of DART's last seconds.

"Later the images were shown to the press as a continuous-motion movie, leading astronaut Wally Schirra to yell 'bail out you fool!' just before the final frame."

Any word yet on whether or not the impact successfully altered the orbit of the rock? Or do we need to call Bruce Willis?

There have been no updates since reporting the impact at the mission's primary website.

It will take time.
They are measuring the period of the orbit of the smaller body (that was hit) around the larger asteroid.
The way it is measured is timing the change in brightness of the pair, as the smaller body orbits the larger one.
Even though the estimated energy of impact was roughly equivalent to three tons of TNT (detonating, we'll assume; one-half-m-v-squared), that's still not very much considering the overall mass of the 500 meter diameter ball of rocks that was slammed.
Waiting is...

No. I didn't see much PTR last Saturday or this year for the matter. Thank goodness!

Massive space rock impact could have 'instantly' created the moon

Computer simulations of giant space rock impacts suggest an alternative 'instant' origin for the Earth-moon system. The simulation screenshot shows a stream of ejected material created by a giant impact coalesces into the body that would become the moon. (Image credit: Dr. Jacob Kegerreis)
