"One could even say Boston is the hate crime capital of the country, at least on a per capita basis. The city's population of around 625,000 residents is but a fraction of New York's 8.2 million residents and Los Angeles' 3.8 million residents, giving it the distinction as the most likely city for a resident to report a hate crime."

Were there more hate crimes, or do more people just report them as hate crimes in those areas?

I suspect you didn't bother reading the article...

So you know, Boston is only about 625k people... and Phoenix would have been a relatively distant 4th with about 120.

In Texas, Dallas and Ft Worth (+/- 1mm people each) had 16 each while Houston with 2.1mm people, with it's people had 13.

Chicago and its 2.7mm people had 10

It seems that the 'top places' are so far above the mean as to almost be comical.

In NY, most (134) are related to religion, which is double sexual orientation, which is double race.... but Boston it is race (102) which is almost double sexual orientation, which is 3 times religion. California is pretty much across the board.

Still, those places are 20 times most other large cities

I'd prefer to see percentages instead, gives a real value to the statistics.

I generally agree, but when the numbers are 200+ and other large cities are fewer than 20, it's really sort of immaterial.

Even if NY is 20 times larger than Houston or Chicago, it has something like 200 times more hate crimes reported.

Boston is like 1/3 Houston or Chicago and 200 times the hate crimes.

I don't need to see percentages to know that a few cities in a few states are where most of these events take place. Cali is the only relatively wide-spread state I saw with numerous cities with relatively high numbers.
